Did they think he was a grumpy old man who was overly uptight about Boomer immorality?

Not sure this applied to wider parts of the electorate; his main problem was the image of being out of touch with the average American. Particularly with the economic stagnation of the early 1990s, Bush struggled to connect with common people as he came from a wealthy family, spend decades in politics and seemed to be more concerned with foreign policy at a time when that no longer was a dominating issue.

The conservative 80s style was also running thin with some people.

Ironically, the fact that the Clintons were honest about their marriage, along with weed and some other things likely energized some moderates to vote for them. The "perfect American" image that was built by the GOP in the 80s was wearing many out.

Yes, Bush was seen as an out of touch elitist though and that hurt him.

The Bush campaign was horribly run too . The fact is once the traditional playbook for republicans from
68-92(attacking democrats for being tax and spend , and weak on crime) was thrown out the window due to them nominating Clinton , Bush really didn’t know how to campaign at all .

I don’t think it was unwinnable though as with a traditional democrat, Bush could have run that playbook and that election would be super close(like 2016/20 close no matter who wins).

I wasn’t asking if Bush seeming like a prude cost him re-election (I know that it was the recession). I’m just asking if Bush was perceived as a prude.

I'd say yes to some extent...his feud with the Simpsons (which was seen as pretty subversive at the time) probably didn't help.
