There are probably millions of African American Nixon voters in 1960, 1968, and 1972.

One thing that I will say is that Nixon managed to win numerous counties in the South which were 70%+ Black in 1972. While black voter turnout wasn’t quite at the level of participation as whites at this time, it still must mean that Nixon had significant amounts of support from Black southerners. Why, I’m not sure.

Nixon in 1960 was the last Republican nominee to receive over 20% of the black vote nationally. He was known as being sympathetic to civil rights at the time.

He got 32% in 1960.  Nixon was backed by Jackie Robinson, and initially, MLK Sr..

James Brown was a friend and admirer of Strom Thurmond!

Although McGovern got 87% of the black vote, Nixon actually increased his share of the black vote in one major metro area: Louisville, Kentucky

Quote
The report said yesterday that President Nixon got his largest black vote in Louisville, Ky., with 30 per cent, compared with 15 per cent in 1968.

Wonder why Louisville specifically....

Was the black community of Louisville somewhat wealthier then the average?

No clue. This is one of those weird unexplainable shifts that I tried to find an answer for but couldn't explain.

Weird unexplained shifts seem to be a particularly common phenomenon in Kentucky.

It’s also possible this is an exit poll fluke.

Wilt Chamberlain was a Nixon supporter.  So was James Brown and Lionel Hampton.

This describes tons of people as was said, but:  Black conservatives, people with vestigial family support of the Republican Party going back to the 1800s, etc
