NYC was at the time, as now, peopled heavily by typical Democratic constituencies (at this time especially "white ethnic" immigrant communities), who were not free from racial animus or resentment of the federal government. It's not a coincidence that the draft riots happened there. In addition, given the city's status as a center for the manufacture of goods made with Southern raw materials, a stopping point for cotton headed to the mill towns of Upstate and New England, and a trade hub for shipping these products to Europe, the business class saw the war and the crisis over slavery as economically harmful.

The Republicans inherited the Northern wing of the Know-Nothings after they likewise split over slavery (just as the Whigs had) in 1856. Furthermore, there had always been an upstate Protestant versus down state immigrant (and later Catholic) dynamic in New York already.

Though it should be noted that there were pockets of Democratic strength in upstate NY, including the areas just South of Albany for example. These also had a substantial Irish or at minimum Celtic settlement pattern, which strongly correlated to Democratic support.

Something I didn't realize until cinyc of these parts did an analysis on the 1860 election at RRHElections, but the separate Douglas/Breckenridge/Bell tickets all across the nation did a fusion slate  in New York State. So where in some places Lincoln benefitted from a splintered opposition to him, in New York that opposition came together.

Lincoln did quite well in terms of getting outright majorities in most all of the states he won, so even if the same had occurred everywhere, it would not have defeated him most likely.

Yeah, it would only have cost him California and Oregon, which weren't very populated back then.
