Flip the 8th
(a ripoff of Flip the 6th, by OBD)

As part of the 2020 redistricting and reapportionment, the rapidly growing state of Colorado earned a brand-new 8th district. The district, like the other 7, was drawn by an independent commission, and the commission left the 8th district a partisan battleground ripe for the picking by either party, and a crucial win for either party. The seat would be important to the Democrats if they were to retain their trifecta, while the GOP, yearning for an end to two years of complete Democratic control, badly needed the seat as well.

From this background, it was somewhat surprising that not that many candidates chose to run in the primaries; in particular, the Democratic Primary had a mere 2 candidates. Perhaps the others had been scared off by Glenn Youngkin's upset victory in the Virginia gubernatorial election a month prior. On the Republican side, there were 3 candidates. Notably, two candidates - John Elway and Jo Duffield - would seek to represent the district not as Democrats  or Republicans, but as independents (in Elway's case) and Green Independents (in Duffield's).

The primary for this seat will almost certainly be contentious no matter what, and the general election even more so.

The current polling stands at:

General Election Polling:
 - Generic Republican candidate: 43%
 - Generic Democratic candidate: 41%
 - Independent John Elway: 3%
 - Independent Green Jo Duffield: 2%
 - Undecided: 11%

The GOP holds a narrow edge in the general election polling over the Democrats, though a significant 11% of voters are still undecided. Independent John Elway starts off with a somewhat impressve 3% of the vote, likely due to his popularity as a figure in the popular Denver Broncos. Lastly, moderate Independent Green Jo Duffield, largely benefitting from popularity among the voters of her hometown, lags at 2% of the vote.

Republican Primary Polling:
 - Safe Adams: 12%
 - Lean Adams: 10%
 - Safe Walzinger: 10%
 - Lean Walzinger: 10%
 - Safe Fujimori: 13%
 - Lean Fujimori: 3%
 - Undecided: 42%
In the GOP primary, a significant sect of voters - more than 2/5 - are still undecided, but those who are decided seem to lean towards YouTuber Jordan Adams. 12% say that they will with certainty support him, and another 10% lean toward him, to give him an impressive 22% at the moment. The somewhat eccentric Brandon Walzinger is slightly behind, at 20%, and notably, half his support comes from people who are not definitely in favour of him but simply lean toward him at the moment. Lastly, the most fiery and controversial candidate is also the only one with political experience - and the one with the strongest base of support. Yes, Keiko Fujimori, the very controversial state representative who held onto her seat by less than a point in both 2018 and 2020, has 13% of voters squarely in her camp - edging out even Jordan Adams in that regard. However, this seems like a case of comparatively high floor, low ceiling, as just 3% of voters lean toward but are not 100% in favour of her, to give her 16%. In order for Mr Adams to win he needs to retain his edge and perhaps add to the proportion of his supporters who squarely support him. Brandon Walzinger will need to contstruct both a broader base of core voters, and appeal to more voters who are still undecided. Keiko Fujimori will need to turbocharge the turnout among her small but enthusiastic base, whilst simultaneously attempt to appeal to a larger audience. It will certainly be an interesting primary on the Republican side in the coming months.

Democratic Primary Polling:
 - Safe Castillo-Tozer: 6%
 - Lean Castillo-Tozer: 19%
 - Safe Castillo: 7%
 - Lean Castillo: 19%
 - Undecided: 49%
There are, as it turns out, even more undecides on the Democratic side. Perhaps oweing to the fact that they have just two candidates and not three, almost half the Democratic electorate has yet to choose a candidate, or even lean toward them. Carmen Castilo-Tozer, a transgender activist, and Pedro Castillo, a self-made activist with an inspiring life story, share similar last names and are both inspiring candidates. As such, just 13% of the Democratic electorate is committed to supporting one candidate (for the GOP, this figure was 35%), with 7% safe Castillo and 6% safe Castillo-Tozer. Another 38% of voters lean toward one candidate but are not 100% supportive of either, and they are split between the two candidates equally. So, what we see is that there is a massive segment of undecided voters up for grabs, and that very few voters have completely decided on a candidate thus far. Overall, Castillo is leading Castillo-Tozer by one point: he has 26% to her 25%. The race is very competitive.

A lot of the requirements for this game are posted in the interest thread; nothing special, just make sure you don't cheat / be rude / be unfair in any way.

As for how to play, let me begin by saying that I will be putting up new polling every week or so (specifically, a 5-10 day window). The dates in the game will begin by being as in real life (so, for instance, today in the game it's December 7), but since the real primary is several months away, time in the game will pass faster than in real life and the date in the game will be after the real-life date soon. I will post how many days each round represents. For this round, we will be going from December 7 until December 19-20. The next round will begin on December 20-21 and probably last till the end of 2021. Nothing too complicated. As for real life events, you may incorporate any and all events that occur in real life in real time. I know that if something happens on, say, December 20, it might already be December 23 in the game (just an example), and thus it might be 'old news.' Don't worry about that. I will not make that affect the polling of anyone in the game.

More pertinently, how to play. Below I've given key information you'll need to know during the primary. The information for the general election will be given then.
You will begin with a sum of $300,000 each for the primary. You will be expected to keep track of how much money you have, and everything will cost. I'd ask that in each post you write, you include somewhere how much money you still have left. For instance, for your opening post, you could write "$300,000" somewhere in the post.
Fundraisers will cost anywhere from $4,000 to $15,000 - you choose. The more expensive the fundraiser, the better it is and the more money you should be able to yield. After each fundraiser I'll let you know how much money you were able to raise - the figure will range depending on how good the fundraiser was and how much it cost to set the fundraiser up (note, however, that simply spending more on a fundraiser doesn't guarantee you more donations in the aftermath).
You will be able to run newspaper ads in the following cities: Brighton, Commerce City, Greeley, Johnstown, Northglenn and Thornton. (Of course, you could run the same ad in any combination of cities you wish.) It will cost $700 to run an ad in Johnstown, $5500 to run an ad in Brighton, $10000 to run an in Commerce City, $15000 to run an ad in Greeley, $5200 to run an ad in Northglenn, and $20000 in Thornton.
TV ads are less complicated; they cost $35000 each and are run across the district.
You can host rallies and town halls, but those cost too. To keep it simple, all rallies cost $6000 and all town halls cost $1500 to set up. You are limited to at most one town hall per round.
At the beginning of each new round, I'll announce how much each candidate raised in donations - it can be as little as $500 (that much is guaranteed per round no matter how badly you're doing) and as much as $40,000 (very hard to get that much or even close to it in a single round).
I'll also host a debate at some point in the primary. The debate will be 100% free for all candidates, and all candidates will be allowed to attend. For the GOP debate, Adams, Wazinger and Fujimori will all be invited; for the Democratic debate, Castillo-Tozer and Castillo. You could choose not to attend, but it will hurt your polling. More information on the debate later.
You will all also be allowed an unlimited number of press releases and statements; all are naturally free.
Also, as for endorsements, I'm not coming up with an endorsement bank, and you cannot simply claim endorsements, either. What will happen is whoever wants to could 'court' the endorsement of whoever they want. As I see approrpiate, I will award endorsements. It's unlikely anyone will get big fish endorsements like Trump's in the primaries, but smaller endorsments (e.g. from the governor or state legislators or congresspeople) will be quite frequent. Note that if someone courts an endorsement, that doesn't necessarily mean they get it. If multiple people court the same endorsement, one of them may be endorsed - but again, it's also possible no one is endorsed. I'd advise no one court Trump's endorsement or Biden's endorsement or the endorsement of any very well-known figure, as it will likely be futile and be a waste of time and resources. Some senators might give endorsements if coaxed, but no member of cabinet, president, vice-president or ex-president will.
The $300,000 primary stipend does not apply to Duffield and Elway. Duffield (Ishan) and Elway (NYE) will not be required to campaign right now. If they wish, they can campaign once the general election begins. The other rules - how much it costs to run ads and fundraisers and how much money you earn per round - do not matter. They will be given $450,000 - but note something very important: this is all the money they have for the whole campaign. They don't get any more once the general election begins. In contrast, the Democratic and Republican nominees will be provided by more money in the general election (and they will also receive consistent support from the DCCC and NRCC, respectively). More information on the general election aspect of the campaign will be provided after the primaries.
Also, you can have an internal poll - it costs $800. If you are a Democrat you can only ask for a poll of the Democratic Primary, if you are a Republican you can ask for a poll of the GOP primary, and if you are Elway or Duffield you can ask for a generic general election poll, or a poll of either the Democratic or Republican primaries (they will cost all $800 apiece).

Please post any questions or concerns you have in the interest thread (or, if you'd rather, you could just PM me).

That's all for now. I know it was a long read, but you can now refer to these rules whenever you want, and these rules will be important to refer to throughout the primaries. Anyone who wants to can begin playing/campaiging now!

John Elway-Fundraisers

John Elway is holding two fundraisers this turn.

The first, is an online auction of Denver Broncos merchandise from Elway's playing days, with proceeds to benefit Elway's campaign. The cost of acquiring the merchandise was around $10,000, and Elway expects to at least triple the money invested in the auction for the campaign.

The second, to be held at the Windsor Community Recreation Center on December 13, in Windsor, Colorado, is a Quarterback skills drill done in the style of a prospective NFL scout for donors. The fundraiser will cost $3,000 to set up, donors will pay $5,000 to attend, and there are 50 slots available.

John Elway's auction is a success! He raises $34,700, a net of $24,700.
(The money raised in the fundraiser will be announced after the fact, sometime around the 12th or 13th of December in real life.)

Finances Update:

Elway - $471,700 (there was an accounting error from NYE which led to him thinking he had less than he actually did; also, this figure does not include the funds raised from his fundraiser, which will be added on November 12-13 our time)
Duffield - $450,000
Castillo-Tozer, Castillo, Fujimori and Walzinger - $300,000
Adams - $294,400

NOTE: The round has been extended until December 25 at 10:00 AM Pacific Time. Those who'd like to divide their campaign schedule for this round more evenly might want to readjust their schedules accordingly.

Jordan Adams hosts luncheon

The candidate spent $10,000 on the event. He talked about how he would push for law and order in Washington. He discussed his harrowing experiences filming riots in the summer of 2020, and how he was physically attacked for filming. He discussed how the government's duty is to protect its citizens from threats both domestically and abroad. He also made his support for higher federal funding of the police known.

Adams raises $10,650 from this fundraiser - a net gain of $650!

Jordan Adams hosts dinner for potential donors, spending $15,000

The candidate discussed the pandemic. He compared COVID to the flu, and said all mandates should be ended. He said 'career politicians' such as Nancy Pelosi and Gavin Newsom were 'raging hypocrites' for their COVID hypocrisy. He said vaccination is a personal choice, and that he did get vaccinated.

While donors liked a lot of Adams' comments, they did seem to be slightly off-put by his rhetoric comparing COVID19 to the flu, with one donor openly questioning the comparison. When it came time to collect donations, Adams yielded less than he spent on the fundraiser, raising a mere $14,300, a loss of $700.

Jordan Adams hosts breakfast for prospective donors, spending $15,000

Adams discussed the Biden administration. He said that Biden is betraying the American public as president. He blamed Biden for supply-chain issues and inflation. He also claimed that Biden disrespected 13 dead soldiers by repeatedly looking at his watch during the memorial ceremony. He also said that Biden left thousands of American civilians to die in Afghanistan at the hands of the Taliban.

While donors appreicate Adams' comments (an Iraq War veteran present at the event nods approvingly to many of Adams' statements), it seems a lot of them are no longer excited by the fundraisers; one loyal donor pulls Adams aside and suggests waiting a bit for the next fundraiser to maximize profits, as donors are currently reluctant to fork over many more donations after 3 consecutive fundraisers and will be more excited if Adams takes a break from fundraisers for a short time before holding the next (though he himself remains loyal and shells out $4,000, to support the conservative cause). Many attend but give smaler-than-usual donations. Unfortunately, this leads to Adams making just $12,000, on this fundraiser, a disappointing loss of $3,000 over the course of the event.

December 11: Holds a small fundraiser in Greeley (-$4,500), courting donations from small donors ($50 per ticket, 250 tickets for sale) and angling for a $1,500 profit.

126 attend, and the remaining 124 seats are empty. Nonetheless, this yields $6300, a profit of $1800.

The fundraiser will cost $3,000 to set up, donors will pay $5,000 to attend, and there are 50 slots available.

Unfortunately, the high price tag leads to a somewhat empty center. Only 10 of the 50 seats are filled as donors are reluctant to pay so much to attend what they fear will just be cheap politics. Nonetheless, the proceeds are massive, with a whopping $47,000 ($5,000 for 10 seats) raised, a net of $47,000 (Elway spent $3,000 on the event) and add to Elway's growing campaign war chest / coffers.

Finances Update:

Elway - $518,700
Duffield - $450,000
Castillo, Fujimori and Walzinger - $300,000
Adams - $285,350
Castillo-Tozer: $260,300 (this figure accounts for all expenses incurred by the posted campaign schedule, and all proceeds from the fundriaser which has occurred, namely the one on the 11th in Greeley, but not the proceeds from the second and third fundraisers, that will occur in the future, in Brighton on the 14th and in Thorton on the 17th, whose expenses has been accounted for)

Jordan Adams fundraises on Patreon, spending $6,700 in total to produce 10-minute vlogs about life on the campaign trail for his 1.6M subscribers

The videos are behind a $5/month paywall and chronicle his time canvassing.

Adams has 6,000 people sign up, and since all pay $5 for now, this yields $30,000 - an impressive net of $23,000 for the campaign from this expenditure.

Further Details
December 14 to December 22
Starting December 20 ostensibly with $260,300

December 14: Donors heard a moderate position on gun control on the candidate's behalf. While she supports the right to bear arms responsibly ("Some people like guns, and that's okay"), she believes there should be measures in place to ensure gun owners are responsible, including registration and background checks.
December 15: At her rally in Northglenn, she calls for raising the minimum wage to "at least $12," citing the near-$16 an hour minimum wage in Denver (which costs, on average, 29% more than the country at-large), and suggesting a national bill that ties the wage to both local cost of living (so, for instance, in Northglenn, if the national wage was $13.50, the local wage would be $15.84, while in rural West Virginia, it would be about $10) and inflation (if the Fair Minimum Wage Act of 2007, for instance, had been tied to inflation after it fully went into effect in 2009, the federal minimum wage would be $9.39 in 2021). Someone in the crowd shouts "Jesse, what the  are you talking about?"
December 16: The candidate copes and seethes in her Thornton campaign office after meeting with Rep. Titone in Arvada, because the moderator wasn't impressed with just her schedule or the basic rundown of her meeting with Titone (let alone her pussyfooting around pulling the transgender card), although she understands why.
December 17: At her fundraiser in Thornton, the candidate says she hopes to pass a bill legalizing marijuana federally, and decriminalizing other drugs as well. "Pot's already legal here," she was recorded as saying, "and we haven't descended into anarchy yet. It's time to end the war on drugs entirely, and take a rehabilitative approach with those who have been caught in the crossfire, rather than a punitive one."
December 18: At her rally in Brighton, the candidate is pressed on immigration reform. She says she supports a pathway to citizenship for all non-violent undocumented immigrants, and praised the move of President Biden to end the use of detention centers.
December 19: The newspaper ad highlights the candidate's record as an attorney. In something completely different, the candidate also does the math with regards to this tweet on her campaign's Twitter account. Long story short: While she agrees we should raise the minimum wage, the Dickensian allegory for destitution is actually $3.13 an hour in 2021, not $13.50. She later tweets out a correction: The $3.13 number is for 2020; it's $3.36 in 2021. On her private account, she unleashes a stream of what might be (okay, what certainly is) profanity of notable creativity and enthusiasm with regards to Joe Manchin.
December 20: At her rally in Greeley (-$6,000), the candidate makes a remark about the Republican primary, namely that while Mr. Adams and Mr. Walzinger claim the other is "a RINO", they ultimately will vote the same way if elected to Congress, giving tax cuts to the rich and screwing over the middle class.
December 21: The candidate orders internal polling (-$800) after the success of her fundraiser.
December 22: At a fundraiser ($50x150) held in Greeley (-$3,500), where a $1,000 profit is hoped for, the candidate discusses with donors her annoyance with Joe Manchin (although not quite in the ways she put them on her private Twitter account three days earlier) for sinking BBB, and described the President delaying student debts again until May 2022 as a welcome surprise.

The candidate spends the rest of her turn, ending with $250,000 before her final three fundraisers of the turn, at her Thornton home, celebrating the holiday with her girlfriend and visiting mothers. Press releases will be made as needed.

(Yeah, sorry I turned Carmen from a generic Berniecrat into a Bat Out of Hell Democrat. Also sorry I didn't follow through with my schedule. Hope OBD and VAR don't mind me ignoring Pedro and Keiko until they officially start running.)

The internal polling was sent to the candidate.

At the Brighton fundraiser, 23 seats are filled, yielding $4600, a profit of $600.
At the Thorton fundraiser, an impressive 177 attend. This yields $8850, a profit of $2750.
Finally, 115 attend the Greeley fundraiser, yielding $5750 (profit: $2250).

Since the candidate had $260,300 before, she now has $270,000.

ROUND 1 COMPLETE; ROUND 2 STARTING
The round will last through January 6-8, at which point the third round will begin with updated polling.

The current polling stands at:

General Election Polling:
 - Generic Republican candidate: 42%
 - Generic Democratic candidate: 42%
 - Independent John Elway: 4%
 - Independent Green Jo Duffield: 2%
 - Undecided: 10%

The GOP retains a narrow edge in the general election polling over the Democrats, though it is now very narrow. And a significant 10% of voters are still undecided. Independent John Elway has fundraised very impressively, increasing profile - he now stands at 4% in polls. Lastly, moderate Independent Green Jo Duffield remains at 2%.

Republican Primary Polling:
 - Safe Adams: 13%
 - Lean Adams: 14%
 - Safe Walzinger: 10%
 - Lean Walzinger: 9%
 - Safe Fujimori: 12%
 - Lean Fujimori: 3%
 - Undecided: 39%
In the GOP primary, a significant sect of voters - 2/5 - remain undecided. Importantly, Jordan Adams campaigned hard and fundraised, while Keiko Fujimori did not at all campaign, and Brandon Walzinger campaigned very little. This leads to both stagnating in support as Adams adds to his support.

Democratic Primary Polling:
 - Safe Castillo-Tozer: 8%
 - Lean Castillo-Tozer: 21%
 - Safe Castillo: 7%
 - Lean Castillo: 18%
 - Undecided: 46%
Carmen Castillo-Tozer campaigned vigorously this round, while Pedro Castillo did not. Predictably, his support dropped slightly, while Castillo-Tozer soared and has created a large lead, from a virtual tie last round.

John Elway-Fundraisers

Elway held just one fundraiser this week, a online raffle in which the winner would get one year's worth of luxury box tickets to Stanford Unversity's Football team, Elway's alma matter.

The tickets cost $20,000 to procure, entry is $100 for one raffle ticket, $1,000 for five raffle tickets, $10,000 for 100 raffle tickets, and Elway's campaign is expecting roughly 10,000-20,000 total raffle tickets to be sold.

Elway sells 341 single tickets ($34,100), 209 five-tickets ($209,000) and eight hundred-tickets ($80,000). This is $323,100, altogether, a net of a whopping $303,100!

ROUND 2 COMPLETE; ROUND 3 STARTING
The round will last through January 16 or 17, at which point the next round will begin with updated polling.

The current polling stands at:

General Election Polling:
- Generic Republican candidate: 42%
- Generic Democratic candidate: 42%
- Independent John Elway: 6%
- Independent Green Jo Duffield: 2%
- Undecided: 8%

The GOP retains a narrow edge in the general election polling over the Democrats, though it is still very narrow. And a significant 10% of voters are still undecided. Independent John Elway has gotten the first endorsement of the race, that of the Republican-turned-Democrat-turned-Libertarian former governor of Rhode Island (and onetime candidate for the Libertarian presidential nomination), Lincoln Chaffee, now residing in next-door Wyoming, who has a reputation of centrism. This important endorsement, coupled with a fundraising haul, has given Elway an impressive 6% in the polls (very impressive for a third-party candidate), as well as an imposing and potentially very powerful campaign war chest. Jo Duffield's support remains at a mere 2%, meanwhile.

Republican Primary Polling:
- Safe Adams: 13%
- Lean Adams: 14%
- Safe Walzinger: 10%
- Lean Walzinger: 9%
- Safe Fujimori: 12%
- Lean Fujimori: 3%
- Undecided: 39%
No campaigning this turn, and polling remains exactly as it was at the conclusion of the previous round.

Democratic Primary Polling:
- Safe Castillo-Tozer: 8%
- Lean Castillo-Tozer: 21%
- Safe Castillo: 7%
- Lean Castillo: 18%
- Undecided: 46%
No campaigning this turn, and polling remains exactly as it was at the conclusion of the previous round.

Elway-Endorsement pursuit

Following the Securing of Lincoln Chafee's endorsement, John Elway will be attempting court, largely by phone, the endorsements of Representative Liz Cheney (R-WY), Representative Adam Kinzinger (R-IL), former Governor John Kasich (R-OH), Representative Jared Golden (D-ME), Senator Angus King (I-ME), former Senator Joe Lieberman (I-CT) and former Governor Brian Sandoval (R-NV).

Elway pitched his political independence, and promised reciprocal endorsements to Cheney and Golden in 2022, and to King in 2024, if they endorsed him.

Unfortunately, most seem reluctant to endorse at the moment, with the exception of Liebeman, who was open to the idea and promised to look into and consider it and then get back to Elway. Still, the only people here who have outright refused to endorse Elway are Cheney, Golden and King (despite his promise of a reciprocal endorsement - Cheney is worried Elway may be too liberal, King is worried Elway might be too conservative, and Golden fears that endorsing Elway may further doom his reelection prospects).

John Elway-Fundraisers

John Elway again had a single fundraiser this week.

This fundraiser was a No-Limit Texas Hold'em Poker Tournament held at Ameristar Black Hawk Casino, in Gilpin on January 12. This tournament cost $3,000 to enter, the prizepool is $5,000, with only the winner being paid regardless of the number of entrants, and there are $250 bounties on Elway, Lincoln Chafee, and three retired members of the Denver Broncos, Terrell Davis, Jason Elam and Al Wilson. In all, around 200-250 total entrants are expected.

The campaign contributed $7,500 towards renting the casino floor, $5,000 towards first prize, and $1,250 towards the bounties in the tournament.

Unfortunately, only a mere 73 attend. Since this gets Elway $219,000, and setting everything upo cost $18,750, the net is $200,250, boosting Elway's total past the million-dollar mark.

Finances Update:

Elway - $1,022,050
Duffield - $450,000
Adams - $306,050
Castillo, Fujimori and Walzinger - $300,000
Castillo-Tozer - $270,000

(Elway is the first candidate to cross the million-dollar mark and is well ahead of all candidates in terms of his war chest - he outpaces the runner-up, Duffield, by more than a 2 to 1 ratio. He outpaces Carmen Castillo-Tozer, who has the least funds, by a nearly 4 to 1 ratio.)
