In a guideline, the EU advises avoiding the terms "Christmas" and "Maria and Joseph". This could discriminate against other cultures.

In the pursuit of political correctness, the European Union (EU) has entered sacred territory. The term "Christmas" should no longer come from the EU Commissioners' lips. You should avoid assuming that all people are Christian, says an internal guide for inclusive communication called #UnionofEquality.

The EU also wants to remove "Maria and Joseph" from the vocabulary of the commissioners. Christian first names should give way to common first names. "Also, don't choose names that are typical of a religion." The alternative for the sentence "Maria and Josef are an international couple" is: "Malika and Julio are an international couple".

A EU commissioner goes from some of the most powerful people in the world to people who are less than complete non-entities, guess which category the former Miss Malta and commissioner for equality fall into. You need a commissioner from every country and the individual countries decides who they appoint (through the EU parliament have veto right). This mean you need 27 different positions and some of them are pretty worthless, which is a good thing because some are given the position to get them out of the national political scene.

This suggestion if it had been implemented would have zero effect, as the council or parliament have not made this into law.
