I agree with you on a lot of things, but this is one where I strongly disagree. Why? We don't need to go back in time. Yes, we need reform, but not this type (I'd favour disolving the electoral college, but not if it is to simply be replaced by this).

If starting from scratch, I'd probably prefer the U.S. go the semi-presidential route: a directly elected president with veto power who gets to appoint a prime minister/cabinet which is accountable to Congress and may be removed through a motion of no confidence

That said, we should switch to a parliamentary system with proportional representation. The head of govt can be called "prime minister" or "president", doesn't matter. Not sure we would even need a ceremonial head of state either.
