As far as the impact on the Presidential race itself is concerned, I think Obama loses NC and IN in 2008; and loses FL in 2012 without the impact of running mates on performance.

Biden wouldn't have helped or hurt Obama, as he would have been elected separately from Obama

Another question is whether the Vice President, being a separately elected position, has its own primary. That raises a whole load of questions. Would Kamala Harris have run for President and dropped to Vice President? Or are candidates mostly aligned beforehand?

I also wonder whether there would be more ticket-splitting, but even more ticket drop off - that might explain your 2016 map.
