If Trump loses 2024 again, and the GOP has a change in ideology, who are the 2028 and 2032 Republican presidential contenders?
The GOP doesn't need for "Trumpism" to die, assuming you mean Trumpism as a set of policy shifts away from free trade, fiscal austerity, open borders, and foreign wars. They need it wrapped in a more polite and competent package. The recently solidly Republican suburban voters of Dallas/Fort Worth for example didn't just magically do a 180 and become true blue liberal Democrats... They didn't like Trump the man.... almost none of their revolt was policy-based... they simply hated the bombastic man carrying water for those policies. Ron DeSantis probably wins TX by double digits in 2024 if Trump decides not to run. Josh Hawley would probably do the same and perform a bit better in the rust belt in theory, but I don't think he has enough charisma. DeSantis has an air of strength and confidence around him no matter what you think of his policies.
