In general, the situation in Europe is similar: the export of nitrogen fertilizers from Russia increased fivefold in the 2022-2023 season. Gas and electricity account for 80-90% of the cost of mineral fertilizers.  So a massive surge in nitrogen fertilizers from Russia is energy imports from Russia by proxy.

...or is it another failing empire trying to keep itself alive by recruiting what it thinks are its colonial subjects to be cannon fodder to prevent the freedom of others of what it thinks are its colonial subjects? Like France recruiting Algerians as cannon fodder to prevent the freedom of the Vietnamese, or Britain recruiting Africans to suppress the rebellion in Malaysia, or (ironically in this context) the Tsar recruiting Ukrainian Cossacks to suppress the uprising in Turkestan?
