Per Rybar, "From the area of Berestovoye , a reinforced enemy battalion made another attempt to attack Kuzemovka. After the loss of more than 10 armored vehicles, the Armed Forces of Ukraine retreated to their original positions."

The Russians actually gained territory near Kuzemovka, and the Ukrainians have indicated that the Russians have launched an attack to the West of Svatove.  The most interesting section of the Ukrainian offensive along the Zherebets River is located near Torske and Yampil (east Lyman) toward Kremmina. The Ukrainians have attacked and retreated each day from the this directions, but they 6 Battalions ready to launch a large attack.

We'll see if those new air-defenses can save Kyiv's powergrid for the winter.

A city held by rebels that have illegally seceded and threaten the territorial integrity of your homeland is a perfectly legitimate target. Union soldiers shelling Atlanta in 1864 were also defending their homeland.

Joining in 2016 certainly is a bit different from 2022. The exact degree is debatable. But I'm pretty skeptical of casting being in artillery in a frozen conflict as something you could judge harshly. The fact that Ukraine's government did engage in some Russophobic policies does not suddenly render Donetsk, an overwhelmingly Russophone place, "not her homeland". It just renders them a discriminated against area in their own land.
And they say everything goes full circle eventually...

You aren't wrong. A frozen conflict is still a war, and in war, certain things that suck can be expected. If the idea of "homeland" is disputed and force of arms is already a threshold passed and diplomacy isn't working, the only place that can be solved on is the battlefield.

SB still hasn’t changed his mind and thinks those union artillery men and this history teacher are the same.

She is still not quite as hot as Bobby Sands, Ray MacCreesh, Francis Hughes, as well as the other (7) Political Prisoners and Prisoners of War within Occupied territories within the North of Ireland at the time of the '81 Hunger Strikes.

We remember them still...

So meanwhile, interesting WaPo story about the mass shooting at the Russian Military Base in Belgorod which happened not that long back...

Limited quotes, paywalled...

Also we get a few additional insights into the Modern Day "Press Gangs" of Mr. Putin's increasingly Fascist style regime, both at home and abroad...

Quote
Ehson Aminzoda seemed to be following the path of many Central Asian immigrants in Russia — initially working as a bricklayer after arriving in Moscow earlier this year, then at a local restaurant, saving his modest earnings in hope of returning to his native Tajikistan to marry. On Oct. 10, he headed out to meet friends, and was seen leaving the Lyublino subway station in southeast Moscow. Then, he disappeared.

Five days later, according to Russian authorities, Aminzoda, 24, was in Belgorod, just 24 miles from the Ukrainian border, where he and another man, Mehrob Rakhmonov, 23, allegedly opened fire at a military training base, killing 11and injuring 15 others.

The Russian defense ministry said the shooting took place during a training session for a group of volunteers “who wished to participate in the military operation in Ukraine.” Russian authorities quickly branded the incident a terrorist attack, deliberately highlighting the nationality of the alleged gunmen, who were Tajik.

Quote
While many men of fighting age have fled Russia to avoid being sent to fight in Ukraine — creating a new, reverse migration of Russians to Central Asian countries, including Tajikistan — some migrants in Russia have been swept into the ranks of the Russian military despite having no obligation to serve.

Quote
The alleged Belgorod shooters disappeared around the same time that authorities in Moscow began raiding offices and hostels, and grabbing men off the streets in what appeared to be a mad push to reach the mobilization’s targets. (On Friday, defense minister Sergei Shoigu declared it completed).

Shortly before Putin issued his mobilization decree on Sept. 21, the Russian military opened a recruitment office at Moscow’s main migrant service center. Since the opening of that center, lawyers and activists say they have been inundated with pleas for help from migrants who say they have been detained, coerced or tricked into signing up for the army.

Looks like the Russians are going HAM: practically all of the strikes you see on the map are within the past few hours. I don't think I've ever seen this live map lit up as much as it is right now.

This is from a month ago.  It is interesting that there do not seem to be large partisan differences on the questions of "diplomatic negotiations to end the war in Ukraine, even if Ukraine has to make compromises with Russia."

While there does seem to be a partisan difference in the level of USA aid to Ukraine

"Parts of Europe Are Starting to Run Out of Diesel"

The USA is not far behind in the diesel crisis.  It seems to be a combination of the cutoff of Russian imports and refining capacity issues.

This might drive the next stage of the inflation crisis in the collective West.

Russia's Sept PPI MoM came in at -0.8%.  Russia is de facto in deflation.  I am surprised the Russian central bank kept rates at 7.5%.  Given these numbers, I would cut interest rates.
