Kyiv's importance as the capital aside, this map illustrates:

1. The importance of successfully defending Chernihiv has in limiting the number of routes available to the Russians when advancing toward Kyiv.

2. Just how vital it is for the Ukrainians to stop the Russian advance in the south from linking up with the separatist regions

Reminder:

Remain hopeful, but not naive

It's not really helpful that both sides in this war have many of the same equipment. (Not really surprising, since they both are descended from the Soviet Red Army)
The Russians have been wearing arm bands on their arms, because both armies wear the same combat uniforms as well. I'd guess marking vehicles with white "Z" and "O" markings was done (at least in part) so that Russian and Ukrainian vehicles could be distinguished from one another.
Though one benefit for Ukraine is that they can use any Russian equipment captured since ammunition and parts are compatible.

This, along with Russia strategic bombers using unencrypted HF radio, makes me wonder how much of Russia's plans NATO intelligence agencies already know about. They predicted the false flag operations in the Donbas and even knew the exact time of the invasion.

I saw on twitter on the first night of the invasion (so grain of salt) that the Russians don't have proper night vision equipment needed to conduct motorized operations at night. It makes sense with all the videos of Russian columns only showing them moving during daytime.

It's clear the political need to achieve quick victory (the longer the war goes on, the harder it is to hide the costs from the public) simply did not meet the capabilities of the Russian army, or at least the forces deployed at the Ukrainian border. I don't think the Russians are playing tactical 3D chess waiting for the moment to send in the "A team" forces. They simply either expected very little resistance or were caught off guard by the West's response to Putin's threats and had to assemble an invasion force and formulate plan of attack at the last minute.

Evidently it was likely a Russian convoy that got lost?!?

Infantry walking in utterly exposed with a few light vehicles in front, in broad daylight seems like not the best idea.

Why are there no machine guns mounted on the vehicle turrets?? And they left them without a sentry and the doors still open...on what looks to be a busy city street? This push into Kharkiv is really weird.

Let us hope their operation in Kharkiv continues to go poorly.

I'm simply going to say: this would absolutely not be happening if the Russian Air Force had already gained superiority in the sky, which all analysis I read claimed it had the capability to achieve in the first 72 hours at most:

The only way Turkey closes the Bosphorus would be if they feel Russia is too weak/preoccupied to force the strait to reopen:

I assume this means the Russians have brought out the thermobarics, this is gonna get real nasty.

People in the replies saying that it’s unlikely to be a thermobaric, but rather a more conventional missile perhaps striking an oil pipeline or refinery.
That's what I'd guess. The refinery attack last night (near Kyiv, I believe) resulted in a similar looking mushroom shaped cloud.

Turkey is a NATO member however, so how exactly would Russia try to force the strait to reopen without triggering a broader conflict?
From what I know about naval tactics (which isn't much) you send in a flotilla/group of ships and ask to be let through. Hopefully they accept, otherwise you just motor your ships through without official permission. Shooting is avoided by the transgressing ships unless fired at, because when going through a narrow strait, your ships are easy targets for land based batteries and artillery.  I suppose it is kind of like a game of chicken, hoping the other nation blinks first. But instead of crashing your car into another coming straight at you, the bad outcome is a war.

I'm certain the Ukrainians had the coordinates of this column quite quickly. People are claiming on twitter it was already targeted/destroyed:

I mean, it does look similar, with vehicles tightly packed together in two lines in a lightly forested area:

If Russia and Ukraine are "bother nations", Ukraine and Belarus are twins.
