Good thread, with the conclusion being the term 'incremental' est applies to what successes are occurring thanks to concentration of attention.

I refuse on principle to post tweets on the secular blog, but Zelensky's economic advisor, Oleh Ustenko, says that Ukraine has enough grain reserves to last the world through the rest of the calendar year if they can get them through the Black Sea (or, one assumes, overland to a Romanian or Bulgarian port).

Fwiw the overland route now is actually to Germany. Better infrastructure.

Brace yourself Sloviansk.. I remember 2014, this city being the first major battle after Maidan, which is next to nothing compared to what Russia is going to do soon.

BoJo needs to put money where his mouth is

Quote
Boris Johnson has said Ukraine should be supplied with long-range multiple launch rocket systems (MLRS) to help Kyiv’s embattled forces prevent Russian invaders from gaining ground in the Donbas.

But the prime minister stopped short of committing the UK to sending the powerful M270 rocket system, which Kyiv has been pleading for from Britain, the US and other Nato members for several weeks.

Johnson said the MLRS would enable Ukraine “to defend themselves against this very brutal Russian artillery, and that’s where the world needs to go” in an interview with Bloomberg Television.

Possible withdrawal from Sievierodonetsk across the river to Lysychansk?:

Finally!

Will this have the range, power, and maneuverability to counter Russian siege engines?

[tweet snip]

It would make sense to use the Siverski Donetsk River as a defensive line, it separates Lysychansk from Severodonetsk.

No supra-national/quasi-federalist structures like the EU. Sounds more like a new EFTA with an added security dimension.

That would make sense.
Make no mistake though, that this is motivated mainly by Boris' political problems at home, most likely. Not to detract from it too much of course. It would most likely be decent if this goes ahead, because Ukraine having some sort of defensive alliance is very much logical for them.

Ukraine is reinforcing their Donbas pockets and apparently this might be their thinking as to why

Further evidence that the NYT editorial board is a uniquely pathetic bunch even by the low standards of American punditry.

Interesting.  Hopefully they have intentionally prioritized this over the Donbas, moving troops, etc. in a way that could explain the recent difficulties in the east?

The meandering new frontline between the two arrows on the map is the Inhulets River. It eventually discharges into the Dnieper River 17 kilometers upstream of Kherson. I'm assuming the gray colored area on the map is what has been (claimed as) recaptured.

Obviously this is not unexpected, but good to see him also acknowledging it. Regaining Crimea and some parts of the Donbas is not feasible in the near future, but that still leaves a lot of occupied territory the Ukrainians can and should focus on.

Quote
According to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Ukraine will not be able to completely take back the territory that Russia has occupied in recent years. "I don't think we can win back our entire territory by military means," he said in an interview his office posted in full online on Saturday. Such an approach would kill hundreds of thousands of people.

The interview was broadcast on Dutch television on Friday.
