Regardless of whether Bush loses or wins this year, from the above list of potential Republican nominees for 2008, who do you think will be the candidate?

I want it to be Giuliani, McCain or Powell but since this asks who do you think will be it I picked Frist, he seems to be getting groomed for it by the GOP.

Bill Owens (if the GOP thinks it can win, then Owens would be a very strong candidate both in the primaries and in the general, but if the GOP looks weak he could wait).

Bill Frist (Like Dole or Kerry, if the GOP is not too confident, but not hopeless, Frist would be a good candidate, much of his behaviour as majority leader makes me think he positioning himself for 2008)

Rick Santorum (he's kinda like the GOP Feingold, he could really appeal to the GOP grassroots and at a stretch might pull off an upset and get the nomination, but like Dean he would be very tough to get elected (but not impossible))

George Pataki (may well have not run in 2006 and have been brought into the second Bush Administration as a representative of the "moderate" wing of the Republican Party his campaign for the nomination would be interesting)

John McCain (if he thinks he can win he might well run and added to that if the prospects look good for the GOP then it could turn into an establishment Owens vs an "insurgent" McCain very like 2000)

Those are the only potential i can think of right now...

Bill Frist and Bill Owens are the most likely in my opinion.

I vote for Owens.  He's conservative, but not frighteningly so.  He's a good talker.  He's a governor in a non-beltway party.

Frist will never survive a primary because his family's hospital chain performed abortions.

Mr. Ford, Governor Owens is the best choice. I think Owens/Giuliani would cream any Democratic ticket.

I would like Dick Cheney to run in 2008, but he would sadly get crushed.

I agree on Owens, PB.  I just wish he had run for senate this year so he'd have some foreign policy credentials.  Reagan got by without them only because he tirelessly studied foreign policy once he was out of the governor's mansion in 1974.

Owens should have ran for Senate also to become a "national figure." That is why Nixon ran for Senate, he wanted to be made a national figure.

I thought this was a list of the candidates we wanted so I voted Santorum for President with Frist, Bush and Sununu close seconds. I forgot to read the actually question, however, that came with the poll asking who the candidate probably will be. I don't think Santorum will run (though I hope I'm wrong) Maybe he can be majority leader. Nominee will probably be Frist or Owens, I'm not sure though.

Santorum could get the nomination, but he would be ripped in the general.

Not true. If Hillary is the nominee, he would have a good chance.

Even Hillary would beat him.

Edwards could take 400+ EVs against him, Hillary probably 300.

Only one person mentioned McCain, and in a hilariously incorrect context. Giuliani was the only other real candidate mentioned at all.

That's a nice word you just coined there. I might start using it.

Someone else coined it, but happy to pass it along to new eyes.

Let's ignore every state until Florida and all the positive publicity we could get that way! Let's also totally ignore the fact that if we ignore all those states, we might not have enough momentum to win, causing our campaign to be totally screwed!
