19th John J. Crittenden (Whig-Kentucky) -  Possibly one of the most influential Senators who have been forgotten by the general public. In my opinion the 2nd most important figure in the Whig Party after Clay. Had he ever consented to run I believe he would have made a fine President.
20th Henry “Scoop” Jackson (Democrat-Washington) - The Senator from Boeing he adds to Humphrey as apart of the Orwell Cold War Liberal caucus. He’s mentioned quite a bit in Episode 2 of LadtMcGovernites podcast.
21st John Warner (Republican-Virginia) - Finally a Virginian, Warner is probably my best pick for a non Democrat, though some 19th and 18th century options were on the board. Particularly readjusters.

An all-Native American round. Nice! I know a historian at Dakota Wesleyan named Sean Flynn who has done some research on Reifel.

Thanks for spotting the connection! Reifel is not very well-known at all (indeed, I had no idea who he was until a few hours ago either).

19th Century: John C Calhoun (D-SC), David Wilmot (FS-PA), Charles Sumner (R-MA)
20th Century: Jeanette Rankin (D-MT), Augustus Hawkins (D-CA), Newt Gingrich (R-GA)
21st Century: John McCain (R-AZ), Barack Obama (D-IL), Michele Bachmann (R-MN)

This will be a hard challenge, but my intention is not to make an ideal Congress, but one that I believe is a cross-section of US history. As a historian, this would be - I have always had an interest in how different historical periods saw eachother. The draft aspect and unequal time periods of this makes it more of a challenge, but I'm up for it.

Also, the number of people who finished serving in Congress in 1999 is infuriating!

Round 4 begins now! Let me thank you all for following through with this project thus far!

Our google doc is up at https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/10z5XiwpLLLnnMLnUP3U0QKKJmoOJ4oEjEho6CGrzHLs/edit?usp=sharing. I recommend consulting it before you make your picks each round to ensure that 1) your picks haven't already been taken by someone else; and 2) you aren't picking for a state you've already selected.

Remember, the objective is to pick ~your~ dream Congress, with one person from each state. However, due to the higher than anticipated number of participants in the first round, I'm combining Alaska and Hawaii into one "state" for the purposes of this exercise to make sure everyone can pick someone they like.

So go ahead and make your round 4 picks, keeping in mind that: 1) you can't pick someone already drafted; 2) you need to draft exactly one person from each state over the course of this activity; 3) each round you need to draft someone who served in the 18/19th century, the 20th century, and the 21st century.

If you missed any previous rounds, that's no problem! You can draft for this round as well as any previous missed rounds, as long as they fit the above-mentioned parameters.

This round will last 48-ish hours, or roughly until noon EST on Thursday.

For the fourth round, my picks are:

James A. Garfield (19th century, Ohio): he could have been a very good president if given the chance, and could have been Speaker had he stayed in the House. The right combination of idealism and realpolitik.

Glen Taylor (20th century, Idaho): The number of not-reactionary Idahoans is limited, so I'm picking Henry Wallace's singing-cowboy, toupee-salesman running mate.

Ben McAdams (21st century, Utah) for similar reasons. Except he's not a singing cowboy nor a toupee salesman.

Sorry, Kaiser Dave. You already selected William Seward as your New York guy in a previous round- although I think Wagner is an excellent pick. Do you want to add someone different to the..um..Kaiser roll?

Would you believe me if I told you that Morrill was already drafted? Would you like to pick someone else for your 19th century person?
