If Warner believes the GOP will lose control of the WH in 2008, then his shot at winning the WH would go down the drain forever with that result. Two terms from the Dem winner and then the VP running with a lot of momentum in 2016 is the likely outcome. Mark Warner will be on no one's radar in 2020.

I think there is more to this than that he wants to spend time with his family.

Either there is some health crisis (Warner or his wife or something) or there is dirt on him he doesn't want to come out in a national race

I sort of have the same suspicion since he doesn't seem to want to run for office at all, in spite of his oh so impressive record. But two years is plenty of time to change one's mind.

I have said before on more than one occasion on these forums that Mark Warner is highly over rated.

To me, this confirms that.

Hey, I agree with you Smiley Probably not for any reason you'd like, though.

Larry Sabato has called Warner's decision a "tragedy for the Democratic party" believing he was "one of the strongest, if not the strongest, general election candidates for the Democrats in the field"

If Democrats can't find a more centrist nominee, "the country may elect another Republican president"

LOL. Hillary would DESTROY Giuliani. Last poll I saw Giuliani didn't beat her in his own home state of New York!

This is just insane logic.

And the last poll I saw had Giuliani beating Clinton in Iowa by 19 points.  Make of that what you will, but I'd pay attention to the fact that Iowa is much more of a bellwether state than New York.

As someone wrote earlier... it's WAY too early to wokrout the electoral dynamics of 2008.

Remember there was a SNL sketch from Feb 1992 which was a Democratic debate "Who Want to be Beaten by Bush in November" - a LOT can change.

Yawn. Back in 2004, we went with the guy that was more "electable", more "centrist" than his chief primary opponent. We still lost. I think it's time for us to stop caring about what the Republicans think, and go with the real Democrat in this race. The GOP isn't going to moderate, so why should we?

Stop Hillary- Support Feingold Smiley

Great news for Gore, Edwards, and Clark.
Gore and Clark didn't change much in TradeSports, but Edwards went from 7.3% to 13.9%.

Warner is an idiot, he had a great chance. Giuliani nor McCain will be elected in the GOP primary. I dont think Clinton is gonna run either. Gore better.

I know - so good.

And also shows how the political landscape can change.

This is certainly a shocker and perhaps a sigh of relief for Republicans, but I never really feared Warner.  There are so many potential anti-Hillarys out there with greater name recognition (Edwards, Gore) and liberal support (Feingold).  It would have been hard for a centrist like Warner to appeal to the grassroots enough to emerge as the nominee.  In the general, he would have been hampered with his lack of experience and lack of charisma.
Still, makes you wonder what happened to make him drop out so suddenly.

Wow, wtf?  Why?

It's down to Clinton, Gore, Edwards, and Feingold now probably.

FYI Warner's stock on tradesports has fallen to 0.6.

Well, that makes things interesting! Darn! I was looking forward to a Warner vs. McCain or Giuliani race.  Now I guess I'm gonna have to see a GOP landslide when y'all nominate Hillary! Smiley

Richardson's cool, but I still prefer Bayh. I would love to see a Bayh/Richardson ticket in 2008.

Has Warner ruled out being the Vice Presidential Nominee in 2008? A Bayh/Warner ticket would be extremely strong, IMO.

Huh... he was the only Democrat candidate who I figured would be almost unbeatable.  I still fear Hillary, but the electoral math is a lot better for us vs her than Warner.  As for the other possible Dem candidates I don't think one of them has enough support to make it out of the primaries.
