No idea why........Maybe he doesn't think he can beat Hillary?  Maybe he doesn't think he has the experience? Is he merely ensuring that he will become the VP of the Democratic candidate?

Exactly. I was sure that Warner was running for president in 2008.

Maybe he'll run for governor again in 2009??

Excellent news for our side.  I feared him.  Regardless of what any Republican told you, we ALL feared him.   Hillary has a very tough road in the general.  The South is now locked up regardless of whether Warner is VP.  All resources can now be spent on the battleground states.

This helps McCain secure the Republican nomination - something I am not thrilled with BTW.  Still, he offers insurance that the ice queen will never be President.

This is very bad news for the Democrats. Sad

We'll need to find another moderate/Southern candidate. I'm not sold yet on Bayh because he's bland and hasn't done much other than remain popular in stubbornly Republican Indiana.

yes he must run for something between now and 2012.  if not, no one is going to remember a one term governor from virginia.  time moves on...

i think warner will come to regret that he didnt seize this opportunity.

I am so shocked by this. He was my first choice for the Dem nomination. I took his pass on running against Allen as a sure sign that he was definitely going to run in '08. Damn it Mark - that would have been an easy pick-up!!

I really hope he runs for Governor again in 2009.

Maybe the Clintons made him an offer he couldn t  refuse.   Thought better of coming beteen the Hillary and her ambitions.  Would you want to get in the way of the Clintons?

Well, I'm surprised.

This ups Bayh's chances maybe, which is fine with me.  But Clinton has had this thing won since.....I don't know when....but Warner's decision really doesn't change a thing.  2008 has always been and will continue to be Generic Republican vs Hillary Clinton.

Well, that really stinks.  If Webb can pull within 5% of Allen there is no doubt in my mind that Warner comming off of a 75% approval rating could have knocked off Allen.

Maybe Hillary said, sit this one out and Ill gurantee you a high level cabinet position or possible VP.

Or the response he received around the country could have been poor.  Who knows?

That leaves me with Bayh and Edwards... possibly Richardson.

That's really surprising and dissappointing.  Warner was the only candidate on either side I really liked.

I've come to believe this may be good news for the Democratic Party and America. It'll help Bill Richardson position himself as an "electable" Democrat and it will ensure, if Warner runs for the Senate, another Democratic Senate seat in '08.

Horse head in the bed.

1. I am VERY surprised by this move

2. I often translate the feelings by some towards Hillary as fear.
- but again if she were an ambitious man, would anyone be regarding her ambition as a negative trait?

I agree that Warner would take the Senate seat when John Warner retires.  However, the odds on the favorite doesn t always run.  See Jeb in Florida.

As far as Richardson, he would certainly be electable.  However, no way he gets by Hillary.  If he gets to be too much of a threat, he too wakes up next to a horse head.

Fear of what Hillary would do to the country is correct, however NOT fear of her as an electable candidate.  She is just too polarizing.

The liberal montra will be that she loses because men are afraid of a strong woman.  That will be the spin when the real reason is she is waaaaaay too liberal.  End of story.  Also, Clinton Bush fatigue takes its toll.  McCain or Giuliani eat her for dinner.

My biggest fear is that she will NOT run.

LOL. Hillary would DESTROY Giuliani. Last poll I saw Giuliani didn't beat her in his own home state of New York! I hope and pray the republicans are stupid enough to nominate Giuliani.

It is MUCH more likely that Warner would run for his old job of Governor, not for the Senate. He is much more of an executive-type, not 1 out 100 legislator-type.

The last poll I saw had him running slightly ahead in New York.  Uh, it is her state too and very blue.  In any event, a competitive race in NY aint good news for a Democratic presidential candidate.

But hey, nominate her.   PLEASE

I have said before on more than one occasion on these forums that Mark Warner is highly over rated.

To me, this confirms that.

You do realize Hillary's home state is also New York?  Hillary would win New York and a few other liberal states, but overall Giuliani would win big.  I would be an enthusiastic Giuliani supporter.

I don't think this is at all about whether he thinks he has a shot at winning the nomination. Either there is some health crisis (Warner or his wife or something) or there is dirt on him he doesn't want to come out in a national race or he wants to be a senator or run for governor again.  It's far too early to know about the dynamics of what Democrat is electable in 2008-- at least wait until the midterm verdict!
