Rep. Heather Cooper: "While I agree with Mr Scott that Doyle Brooks is a radical, unwinnable extremist, I take fault with his saying that Yuri Testikov is a better person than Doyle Brooks is. Doyle Brooks has some good ideas (though many others are extreme); the same cannot be said of Yuri Testikov. I condemn his statement that Yuri Testikov is better than Doyle Brooks, and I suggest that he has no place in a Republican primary if he truly believes this. Doyle Brooks might be extremist but he is several steps better than an anarchist, radical, far-left socialist. We should all be able to agree on that here in the GOP, and if you don't, that's cause for concern."

I didn't come out and say that Testikov was a better person than Doyle Brooks, I simply Brooks was more radical, mainly for rhetorical effect, though I reworded that Tweet to avoid coming off in the wrong way

Well, to be honest, it kind of sounded that way. Either way, frankly, in this game I need to do whatever it takes to increase my polling since you're gaining ground on me and Brooks is soaring ahead. No hard feelings, I hope.

I'll be taking a break for a few days. My mother was put on a ventilator with omicron not that long ago.

To be clear, as a reminder I'm much more liberal than my character. I actually agree with what Ryder is saying in the game, and I abhor people like Doyle Brooks (even Dale Scott is much too conservative for me).

Same. I'm an European liberal IRL, one can imagine where that puts me on the US political spectrum.

I usually prefer playing these games with characters who have completely different views from me, I find it more interesting. I also think it's a testament to just how extreme the GOP has gotten that people like Brooks sit squarely within the party's mainstream

Yeah, and I honestly think you will win the GOP nomination in this game. As I said, I'm much more liberal than Heather Cooper, though we have some views in common and I purposely made her a tad more moderate on the issues I'm most liberal on (e.g., guns) and the issues I'd think a female Republican would be more moderate on (e.g., abortion).

I'm sorry, but I may have to drop out. Seeing someone talk about COVID control measures like that, even in the context of a game, is really distressing my. My mum's on a ventilator with omicron and we're not allowed to see her because of the risk.

I am so sorry, I meant no offense. I thought that this game is just that and not a way to express our own views (through one can certainly do that) or to spread any particular ideology. I am sorry you are going through this and that I have in any way added to your distress. In that context, I've decided to drop out too. I really hope your mother gets better...

Agreed. This game is purely for fun, and while I'm sure RGM was playing a character it seems that the game is causing actual stress. Y'all take as much time as you need, and GoTfan, best wishes for both you and your mother.

OR 2022 Megathread
« on: October 05, 2021, 05:27:10 PM »

Didn't see a link for this in Gass' pinned list at the top of the board, so figured would go ahead and start one.

Mods please add to the list or merge if there is one out there already which I didn't see.

Looks like we already have one candidate running for election in Oregon's new Congressional District (OR-CD 06).

Quote
Democratic county commissioner Thomas Ryder plans to run for Oregon’s new 6th congressional seat

A Democratic county official who helped lead the Hubbard Bridge replacement project in Benton County now appears to be planning a run for Oregon’s new sixth congressional district.

Com. Thomas Ryder, D-Corvallis, currently serves as chair of the Benton County Commission and according to people contacted by The Oregonian/OregonLive, Ryder has been making calls this week to inform people he plans to run for the sixth congressional district.

Ryder, a second-term commissioner who previously worked as an urban planner for the Oregon Department of Transportation and as the owner of Ryder Community Development, did not immediately respond to a request for comment Tuesday.

The article also mentioned that State Senator Eric Talbot and environmental scientist Christine Jang are making moves toward running on the Democratic side too. Ryder probably has the advantage, but it could be a competitive race if these candidates follow through.

It's a shame that Tina Kotek caved to the state Republican caucus, as this could've been a nearly safe Democratic hold.

Thx for mentioning that!

Didn't want to overquote, especially since it is a subscriber exclusive and I've been burned a couple times in the past by mods for overquoting articles.

For those who are not subscribers, The Oregonian (Oregonlive) generally releases exclusive articles towards broader release within a day or two after for those of you who can't afford to subscribe and just want to look up an occasional article from the news outfit from behind the Paywall.

Agreed with your general gist that Ryder has the upper hand right now, but it's still way too early, let alone potentially a few more contenders likely to jump into the ring over the next couple months.

Really curious about who the PUBs will end up having on their list, since basically this district includes some of the more heavily "Evangelical Christian" type voters on the PUB side when it comes to Republican Primaries, where this faction of the PUB Party tends to perform much better in intra-party elections.

Regardless, definitely looking like the DEM bench will grow dramatically for future elections with a new CD in play and shifts in existing State/House LDs.

Huh. I had been thinking the two most likely winners in OR-06 were Paul Evans and Teresa Alonso Leon--which I suppose could still happen. Guess we'll see.

OR CD-06 DEM PRIMARY

Teresa Alonso Leon passes on running.

"

Oregon Rep. Teresa Alonso Leon is declining to run for the state’s new sixth congressional district in what is shaping up to be a competitive Democratic primary, instead running for re-election to the state House.

Alonso Leon, who is from Woodburn, formally announced her decision on Thursday morning. She is currently serving her third term in the state House and was previously a Woodburn city councilor. Oregon’s new sixth congressional district, drawn by state lawmakers in 2021, covers agricultural areas including Linn County, Benton County, and the bulk of the state’s Latino population in and around Woodburn and Salem.

....

"

I think there's a good chance she runs in 2024 if Republicans win the 6th district this year. Maybe she decided it wasn't worth risking her state House seat for a competitive primary and general election.

Chemeketa Community College instructor Charlotte Adams is also running as well.... there are several other not very well known individuals that have announced, including an environmental activist Yuri Testikov who reminds me of a few people I knew in my younger years.

Honestly at this point I'm not sure there are any dramatic political contrasts that have yet formed in terms of how these candidates are branding themselves with policy positions, although Ryder seems like he may be slightly more progressive based on their political records and campaign websites.

Here is Thomas Ryder and Christine Jang's ballotpedia info

https://ballotpedia.org/Thomas_Ryder

https://ballotpedia.org/Christine_Jang

Similarly to Jang, Charlotte Adams has not previously served in elected office but has been active in some grassroots groups and community organizations.

https://ballotpedia.org/Charlotte_Adams

I suspect this race might come down to more of a regional split between the Salem metro part of the district vs the Corvallis area....

In the OR-06 race, the Republicans are constantly engaging in Twitter wars about mask mandates, "Critical Race Theory", and Cooper's and Scott's weird obsession with Doyle Brooks allegedly thinking Trump won 410 EVs in 2020 while the two major Democratic candidates seem to be connecting well with the people of central Oregon and actually have plans to solve the problems facing this country. I think Democrats have a clear advantage here.

Do you red avatars never learn? I remember when loads of people on the VA-GOV megathread were dunking on me for suggesting that Youngkin could win, and look what happened. Republicans will likely win this race, and don't tell me I didn't warn you that real people don't vote based on mean tweets and 1/6 references.

I'll be keeping on eye on the OR-06 race and will be interested to see how the Latino vote breaks down in the Democratic primary and in the general. Christine Jang would be an interesting Representative for that district.

Would prefer that there remain a Doyle Brooks player, if there are any takers.

If not, I'll create a story about him bowing out of the primary and leave it at that.
