The Latinate peoples are actually all descendants of the crew of Björn Ironside's expedition to the Mediterranean. There was no real substantial population or culture to speak of in the Mediterranean until the 9th century when the Vikings arrived. Columbus was surely of Nordic stock and was following in the path of his forebears when he crossed the Atlantic 471 years later.

Germanic peoples originated in southern Sweden before moving south, if I am not mistaken. So the British peoples are of Nordic / indigenous UK origins, I suppose.
