It’s hardly important at all to me. Even though I’m an atheist, I would support a BRTD-type Democrat any day of the week over a Sinema-type atheist/agnostic/NONE. However, if both the candidates were nearly identical in terms of politics and perceived competence, I suppose that their religion could be a deciding factor.

I could vote for an atheist, a christian or a jew. I would not vote for others.

Accidentally voted “Yes (D)”. I meant to vote “No (D)”.

It is not a subject I have ever even encountered in elections I have been involved in.

Why not?

And of course we all know what religious group is *mostly* being referred to when statements such as this are made - but what about Bahai? Jains?? New Age Pagans? Zoroastrians?? Rastas?

I would only vote for a Christian (Protestant or Catholic) to be President. However I have endorsed and voted for other religions for lower offices before, and will continue to do so when a holistic view of the issues makes it appropriate.

Nah, not important. Only exception is a candidate who's making religion the center of his campaign or is a fundamentalist of any kind.

Religion to me is a private matter and should not influence the choice for a candidate.

Religion is a private matter. So long as the candidate in question acts in the best interests of the United States and all her citizens, I care little whether the candidate is Roman Catholic, Protestant, Greek Orthodox, Jewish, Sunni, Shi'a, atheist, Pastafarian...

Do you care what religion your plumber is? If not, why should you care about the religion of public servants?

People tend to hold politicians to different standards. Everyone wants and plumber, doctor or pilot who's a professional while "outsider" candidates often seem more appealing. None would hire a doctor without experience or a pilot that never landed a plane.

I tend to vote for candidates who share my values. Because my values are heavily influenced by Catholic Social Teaching, I'm often drawn to candidates who are Catholic and vocal about their faith.

Not important--as long as they don't try to impose their religion on others.

In an ideal world, I would like all our politicians to be evangelical Christians who view their role in government as simply a mission field for their faith

As long as they're not zealots and their faith doesn't influence their policymaking, I don't care.

It's important they have a basic appreciation for religion and why people find it so important in how they live their lives. If they can do that without being religious themselves, that's fine.

I don’t care one bit really, as long as they aren’t a radical evangelist or something
