On August 9, 1974, as he takes the oath of office, Gerald R. Ford is given the full political and manipulation skills of Emperor Palpatine. NOT his Force powers.

How does the Ford presidency go?

Rather successfully but still, Reagan loses the 1980 election to Ted Kennedy, since America will be in the mood for a change after twelve years of Republican control of the White House and Kennedy won't be damaged by his attempt to unseat a Democratic incumbent.

Ford wins reelection in 1976. You get a quite left-wing democrat elected in 1980 with things looking very different in 2021. A basic income since that was in the air, national healthcare, other. Still some, if far less than OTL deregulation given that idea being the air but think deregulation of small businesses/less red tape for small business as opposed to OTL's reagan/clinton type deregulation.

Given the energy shock/general zero-sum environment you do still a retrenchment/cutback in alot of americans' prosperity/standards of living. However, this would be difference since it'd be the professional-managerialist class really losing out along with a lesser extent alot of the employed "middle class"(losing various benefits since employers can point to basic income being a thing plus national healthcare as an excuse to cut back on alot). Basically you'd have a situation where 20% take a severe hit comparable to say OTL's unskilled labor post-1980 and another 40% taking a noticable if not quite as bad hit. Inequality is significantly less without the professional class eating economic growth.
