Jimmy Dore called this inevitable blowup months ago. Typical Cult of Personality lifecycle for Sandy, who then proceeded to start crying after her vote.

It's a horrible response tinged with "the sinister Jews in my district forced me to vote against my conscience and I really wish I had gotten to vote for leaving Jewish children undefended". It's also word salad that will please no one. She deserves all the blowback she gets for this, especially from the scum-vultures she gleefully courted. Something something leopards-eating-faces party.

It's amazing. In one swift stroke she managed to:

1. Alienate her anti-Semitic far left rabid fans.

2. Make the right ridicule her even more than usual.

3. Make liberals and mainstream Democrats distance themselves even farther from her, and in some cases even join the right in outright mocking her embarrassing behavior.

Like... did she learn NOTHING from Tulsi? Voting "Present" satisfies NOBODY and angers EVERYBODY! If she wanted to go far left uncompromising extremist who stands by what she believes no matter what, she should have voted No as the rest of the Squad did. If she wanted to go reasonable person who knows when to keep her head down and mouth shut when it comes to extremely controversial issues (especially in her state), she should have stayed out of it entirely. She failed miserably at both. Now she somehow sounds even MORE anti-Semitic ("the Jews forced me not to vote No!") AND looked weak and pathetic (literally crying on the floor of Congress) AND pissed off the people who previously believed in her most.

Just one of the worst political moves I have ever seen.

I hope she DOES try to primary Schumer now; she will be eaten alive.

That was never going to happen and you know it.

If the US dropped $1B of funding, Israel would pay that $1B themselves. And if they won't do that, maybe they don't value the lives of their children as much as they claim to.

Dear Lord, what utter tripe. What on earth is the community that she keeps referring to as "our community"? Certainly not her Congressional district; I really can't imagine the Iron Dome is exactly a kitchen-table issue in NY-14. This is also an explanation for a no vote, not a present vote, which remains baffling and recondite except as an expression of pure people-pleasing cowardice.

Unstanned. This is ridiculous.

If you're popular among people who spend several hours a day discussing politics on the internet, then your fanbase is destined to implode eventually.

Amazing how as ideologically varied as the posters in this thread are, somehow nearly none can come up with a coherent refutation of her statement that doesn't resort to outright dismissiveness or lazy and predictable cries of anti-Semitism.

Israel = bad, murderous, vile ethnostate. AOC imperfect and fun to mock.

How about that one?

Well, sure. But that's not what she wanted. Remember, she's called for a total arms embargo on Israel, meaning they would legally not be allowed to buy the interceptor missiles they need from the US, even with their own money paid to defense contractors.

So that might not have been what the vote was about, but I'm not about to give her a pass on her evil little heart's desire.

It's difficult to refute such a shambolic statement in a way that isn't itself shambolic. I think my point about the statement making some degree of sense as an explanation for a no vote but seeming completely disconnected from the present vote that she actually cast (and the reasons why doing so pissed everybody off) was fairly grounded and specific, though.

There was no arms embargo on the table anywhere in this amendment or any other part of the bill.

You specifically said "a vote for leaving Jewish children undefended."

Do you believe that absent $1B in American taxpayer money, Israel would have no way of coming up with that $1B and they simply would have no Iron Dome anymore?

Either Israel is a shining beacon of success with its burgeoning tech sector and high per capita GDP, or it's a wretched, destitute country whose only lifeline is foreign charity and any reduction in US subsidies would be snapping the tenuous hold on existence. You can't have it both ways.

Bowman and Pressley are the best out of the squad. Fwiw Bowman actually voted yea on iron dome funding and while I disagree, at least he isn't fence sitting.

My congressman also voted present yet got no pushback.

If AOC ruins the popularity of socialism than it will end up being the only useful thing she has ever done in her political career

The very definition of ethno-religious tribalism is "having it both ways." You can't shame these people, because they're explicitly rejecting any universal standard of justice. That's why these Israel threads are always unfailingly ugly and unproductive. I will say, however, that if I'm going to be moderated for characterizing Republicans as racist/authoritarian (a real stretch) under the pretense of "excessive hyperbole," completely unfounded accusations of antisemitism shouldn't be allowed to stand. It evinces a pretty blatant double-standard.

Yeah, this makes absolutely zero sense. Frankly embarrassing.

As a member of Congress, sometimes you have to take tough votes and explain to your constituents why they were necessary - that's just the name of the game. This statement doesn't explain anything, instead it makes AOC's vote make less sense if anything.

I'm not AOCs biggest fan, and I'm not AOCs biggest hater. I wish more representatives voted present or abstain or whatever more often. I also wish twitter would shut the  up.

Middle ground is an acceptable position when you represent a diverse community, more people need to be able to appreciate that.

This is far from the only intra-left disagreement. Assuming the Democratic left were to get anywhere with her around, she’d have to handle much more salient dilemmas (e.g. NIMBYism vs “gentrification” arguments or climate policy vs anti-imperialism).

The scene she made over this indicates her leadership qualities in such a scenario would be poor. I’d have more respect if she’d calmly voted present without the song and dance.
