This is a map of all counties in the fifty states, District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico where a majority of the United States population identified as either Hispanic or Latino at the time of the 2020 Census.

Image Link

This thread will be used to track Hispanic-majority counties over the coming years and their expansion, being bumped whenever a new county becomes Hispanic-majority, and to talk about the increasing influence of the Hispanic population on American culture, economics, demographics, and politics.

See this file I published on Wikimedia Commons for a full-size image, citations, and tools used too create the map.

Honestly surprised there are absolutely none in the southeast outside of FL.

There are big county-sized chunks of Houston and Dallas which are majority Latino of course. There's also a decently large Latino community in Northern Prince George's County, and NoVa is a center for the Salvadoran diaspora. And there's a decently large section along the Buford Highway with a large Latino community near Atlanta, as well as in Gainesville and Dalton.

Of course, none of these correspond to county lines, and outside of the Texas cities are generally rather diffuse enclaves. The Latino population is fairly large in a lot of southern states, but it's not super geographically concentrated in a lot of places.

Yes, a lot of concentrated Latino areas in the Southeast tend to either cross county lines or are found in very large counties, making it more difficult to see. The below areas are expanded a bit outside of their concentrated areas, but only to show the actual influence of Latinos within the region.

Currently, I live in the most Latino non-urban county east of the Mississippi*, but one wouldn't necessarily expect it or observe it unless traveling through it directly (and it remains 56% white).

* I guess Hendry County, FL might take that distinction technically, but w/e

Also, going to note why these counties don't vote like they are majority Hispanic. The answer is that they are more analogous to Tulare CA, with large numbers of residents below the voting age, and large number of non-citizens who work in agriculture. This leads to a peculiar situation similar to the CA valley where you have some very blue towns surrounded by very red rural precincts, but the towns have a tiny number of voters.

1000-1 odds that such a Congressional seat could be drawn in your lifetime.  There are only so many meat-packing centers.

Are there any counties that used to be majority Hispanic (since that question has been measured by the Census, so not talking about in the mid-19th century) but have since dropped below majority? Maybe in northern New Mexico or southern Colorado?

I tried to get a mere State House seat, but that's hard. Very hard to get a seat that is both majority Hispanic and Dem-leaning.

My impression of the West Texas / Panhandle Hispanic communities is that they are multi-generational Tejanos who do not necessarily have much in common with recent immigrants in urban centers, but I could be wrong. Ancestry data from the ACS could be helpful for this.

I have revamped the Wikipedia article on the title topic so you can find all the latest relevant data regarding Hispanic-majority Counties in tabular format in sortable lists.

The fact that there is a growing Latino population in PG County should alarm members of the blue blood Black community----you may see a deep rift there...

Where can Black people have their own Black homogenous county, especially one that is wealthy, the wealthiest Black majority county in America (Prince George's County)

The Yakima Valley is the most surprising and unexpected place with the highest percentage of hispanics outside any major metropolitan area and the border states

Why is Texas County, OK, painted? It's about 20% Hispanic according to Wikipedia... Similar story in Dallam County, TX.

Why is Texas County, OK, painted? It's about 20% Hispanic according to Wikipedia... Similar story in Dallam County, TX.

They're painted because the official 2020 Census Results showed that Texas County, Oklahoma and Dallam County, Texas were both majority-Hispanic.

10,823 of Texas County's 21,384 residents are Hispanic or Latino (50.61% of the population)
3,707 of Dallam County's 7,115 residents are Hispanic or Latino (52.10% of the population)

I have updated the Wikipedia article of Texas County to reflect that. Dallam County I care too little to update (it's using 2000 census numbers right now) but if you're up to the task go for it.

Considering up-to-date numbers you can find them all on this list which I highly encourage you to check out.
