Like if it was possible to bring back dinosaurs or other extinct species like the dodo or the woolly mammoth, would you think it is ethical to do so?

There's no inherent reason why it wouldn't be, but the prudential issues with anything that's already been extinct for a while (in geological terms) strike me as enormous.

The woolly mammoth might create some mammoth problems, but bringing back the gastric brooding frog wouldn't affect things much.

I wouldn’t say it’s unethical, but we shouldn’t do it. Those species died out for a reason, and they likely will just die out again. If they don’t, they’ll probably drive other animals to extinction that would’ve otherwise been fine.

It absolutely is not ethical. It's basically humanity playing God and probably making a big mistake while at it. I could see an argument for species extinct due to human activity in the recent era; but something like mamooths or dinosaurs should be a big no no.

I don't see any argument against it that isn't based on the events of Jurassic Park.

Since humanity is made in the image of God, humanity "playing God" isn't itself morally disqualifying. Motivations, methods, proportionality, and anticipated effects on the human spirit and the natural world have to be considered. That does rule out most of what people talk about when they talk about "playing God", but it's not clear to me that it rules out cloning a few mastodons or cave bears here and there.

Ones killed by humans for hunting purposes/ human over-development is moral. But ones that died off because of natural purposes thousands of years ago for reasons not relating to humans? The species that went extinct because of natural reasons should be left to rest in the hall of world species. But ones that went extinct because of humans own stupidity or selfishness? Many of those should be brought back.

I mean, it depends. For (non-avian) dinosaurs and other species that died off in the various mass extinction events, they were built for drastically different environments and they couldn’t be expected to thrive outside of captivity anyway.

But, for a good chunk, I’d dare to say most, of the species from the Holocene era, the reason they died off was directly related to human activity. Whether it would be prudent to bring them back is a different issue, but I don’t see the ethical issue with bringing back a species like the Mammoth that humans probably killed off in the first place.

Idk about “ethical,” but I think it’s a waste of money that could go towards preventing further extinctions.

I'm far from an expert on this subject, but I have been led to believe that many extinct animals may have relied on gut flora that no longer exist. In this case there is a reasonable argument to be made that creating them anew would be inhumane.

I want to see a Tasmanian Tiger.

And a nasty Tyrranosaurus Rex for some entertainment.

T-Rex becomes allot less cool when you figure out it’s just a big ostrich.
