The worst political leadership ultimately comes from leaders proud of their toughness -- tough and proud of it. Idi Amin was tough. Saddam Hussein was tough. Agosto Pinochet was tough. The typical commie dictator was tough. Ivan the terrible. Genghis Khan, and Attila the Hun were certainly tough. I'm not saying that we need a wimp.

Good people like Abraham Lincoln and Sir Winston Churchill, should they ever do something nasty to others do so only after other alternatives are no longer available. They have some moral limits, and that may be the difference between winning a Great Struggle and having to continue it until the Other Side is exterminated.

Effective leaders don't show their toughness until provoked.  .   

Sociopaths find it easy to make the tough decisions because they have no qualms about hurting others.
