The one with a Democratic governor and leftward trends.

Missouri has better cities, but Kansas is better overall. My answer would change depending on if you're asking "Would you rather live in the best place in Missouri or the best place in Kansas?" or "Would you rather live in some random place in Missouri or some random place in Kansas?"

Missouri has actual cities and was home to Harry Truman.

That tips the scales in its favor for me.

Though I guess I wouldn't hate living in the Kansas part of the KC metro.

Kansas, because Missouri and its government has gone to the dogs, and neither St Louis (the Chicago of Missouri) nor Kansas City (a smaller, less chaotic, Kansas City is just across the border). And Kansas, conversely, has a Democratic governor and rejects political extremism. It has a lot of liberal and urban areas in the Northeast, and even otherwise, it has a lot of great places. It doesn't have any gigantic cities like St Louis, but it has reasonably-sized cities with lots of job availabilities and growing populations.

On the other hand, some random place in Kansas has a much higher likelihood of being literally in the middle of nowhere, which isn't quite the same for Missouri, which doesn't have huge tracts of land with no people. (Unless you're weighting for population I suppose).

Fair point, but I'd rather live in the middle of nowhere with nice people than in a decently-connected city full of closeted KKK members and Copenhagen chewers.

Dude, Lawrence is awesome. Also Wichita is definitely at least as much of an "actual city" as where you live.

There are a lot of great things about Chicago, don't misunderstand me. But in this context I was referring to how Chicago and St Louis are both declining in population (or at the very least aren't growing nearly as fast as the nation). So it's not like St Louis is like Atlanta or Phoenix or Dallas - it doesn't have a lot of growth or job opportunities, and it doesn't seem to have a really great future - it seems like it's on course to become like Detroit. In that respect, MO is just St Louis (a city on the decline, as I said), Kansas City (which is in KS as well) and swaths of mostly rural, uninteresting and very Trumpish farmland.
