A libertarian and here's my explanation for it.
They voted Democratic early on since it was the party of "state's rights" and they identified as a federalist. They later turned against FDR's New Deal although they were not part of the "Jim Crow camp" so they didn't "settle" unlike most conservative southern wihtes, so they switched to the GOP. In 1944, they were disgusted by either of the options during WWII but later voted for Dewey based off of opposition for Truman's foreign policy.
They then voted for Stevenson viewing Eisenhower as a progressive hawk and their opposition to civil rights (although Goldwaterite in nature) led them to be comfortable with someone like Sparkman and Johnson on their respective VP tickets.
In 1964 opposed to the CRA, they voted for Goldwater even though he was a hawk.
This person was also likely to be socially progressive on other issues such as abortion and drug legalization and likely identified with The New Left on this regard and voted based on social issues until they died in 1973. If this person was alive after this point, he or she would probably vote for Reagan and then become disillusioned and vote libertarian.
This fits, probably this person would consider themself a Democrat in the tradition of Jefferson. I’m sure this accurately described some people.
