Gadzooks! Round 11 of the Fantasy Cabinet Draft has dawned.

If you missed a pick from an earlier round, you can make it at any time after. I've noted which picks you are missing on the google sheet linked below.

If you would like to join in the game, I'd be happy to welcome you. PM me for instructions.

For the eleventh round:

C. The Midwest (OH, IN, IL, MI, WI, MN, IA, MO, ND, SD, KS, NE)

Remember that you will need to pick a...

To help you keep track of who is off the board, I've started a google sheet at: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1lKijLTH6JqoAZlPlzOJ1dn0DP-vM7PswwmdgpE57jCU/edit?usp=sharing.

We shall end this round  at 8 pm EST on Tuesday. Let me know if you prefer not to be tagged when a new round starts.

I'm reaching across the aisle for David Beasley. Although he was governor of South Carolina in the 90s, he has been the Executive Director for the World Food Programme for the last four years. Last year, that organization won the Nobel Peace Prize- so I believe this is still a valid pick for the 2010s.

President: Elizabeth Warren (MA)
Vice President: Julian Castro (TX)

Secretary of State: VACANT
Secretary of the Treasury: Katie Porter (CA)
Secretary of Defense: Tim Walz (MN)
Attorney General: Preet Bharara (NY)
Secretary of the Interior: Christine Gregoire (WA)
Secretary of Agriculture: David Beasley (SC)
Secretary of Commerce: Greg Fischer (KY)
Secretary of Labor: VACANT
Secretary of Health and Human Services: VACANT
Secretary of Housing and Urban Development: Nan Whaley (OH)
Secretary of Transportation: Keisha Lance Bottoms (GA)
Secretary of Energy: VACANT
Secretary of Education: Jahana Hayes (CT)
Secretary of Veterans' Affairs: Mike Michaud (ME)
Secretary of Homeland Security: Xavier Becarra (CA)

Also, did you not approve my pick of Annise Parker last round?

She was Mayor of Houston from 2010-2016, so she should qualify under both the old rules and the new rules.

I'm afraid Utah Neolib already picked him. Have you got an alternative choice for this round?

Kathy Castor for Secretary of Energy - a pick that was sort of inevitable given the other people I picked. She seems to share Inslee's goals on climate change, though I assume he would very much lead from the top there.

Here we are--  Round 12 of the Fantasy Cabinet Draft.

This is our last regionally-bound draft pick. For Round 13, I'm inclined to just let everyone make their last 3 choices at once-- and these picks can be from anywhere in the country. Sound good?

For the twelfth round:

The Fonz, KaiserDave, Gassman, and OldSchoolRepublican will pick from the Northeast.
BattistaMinola, Clinton/Kaine Voter, and Our Enemy the Irish will pick from the South.
UtahNeoLib, Beesley, and myself will pick from the Midwest.
NY Express, RGM2609, Ishan, and Senator OBD will pick from the West.

A. The Northeast (ME, NH, VT, CT, MA, RI, NY, NJ, PA, DE, MD, VA, DC)
B. The South (NC, SC, GA, FL, AL, MS, LA, AR, TN, KY, WV, TX, OK) + Territories
C. The Midwest (OH, IN, IL, MI, WI, MN, IA, MO, ND, SD, KS, NE)
D. The West (CA, OR, WA, AK, HI, NV, AZ, NM, ID, MT, CO, WY, UT).

Remember that you will need to pick a...

1. Secretary of State
2. Secretary of the Treasury
3. Secretary of Defense
4. Attorney General
5. Secretary of the Interior
6. Secretary of Agriculture
7. Secretary of Commerce
8. Secretary of Labor
9. Secretary of Health and Human Services
10. Secretary of Housing and Urban Development
11. Secretary of Transportation
12. Secretary of Energy
13. Secretary of Education
14. Secretary of Veterans' Affairs
15. Secretary of Homeland Security

To help you keep track of who is off the board, I've started a google sheet at: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1lKijLTH6JqoAZlPlzOJ1dn0DP-vM7PswwmdgpE57jCU/edit?usp=sharing.

I was going to be more bipartisan, but given how this week is shaping up, I’m in no mood for that. Another WFP director, Ertharin Cousin of Chicago, as my Secretary of State.

Are you trying to hit certain demographic numbers? I find myself doing that even subconsciously sometimes!

Although it's not possible to get an even gender split, I think Inslee would aim for parity as much as possible. If I picked a Republican I wouldn't bother (it'd be pretty hard anyway). The regional balance is of course already in built, but I've tried to get fair representation in too (and in a parliamentary cabinet, various groups will want their fair share even more). Plus it suits my mind - I like these things to be balanced myself. Though I should add that in all cases I feel I could chose the 'best person for the role' (except Transportation, where KaiserDave beat me to it).

Looks like our project is ending with a whimper as folks lose interest. That’s okay- this was all for fun anyway- but let’s wrap things up. Having made three picks from each region, you are free to use your remaining picks from anywhere in the United States. As long as nobody else picked them first and they were active in the 2010s, it’s fine!

If you have missed any previous rounds, take a look and see what spots you still have left on the google sheet, and feel free to recruit any outstanding cabinet secretaries: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1lKijLTH6JqoAZlPlzOJ1dn0DP-vM7PswwmdgpE57jCU/edit?usp=sharing.

I’ll post my last three soon but for now- thank you for playing! If people are interested, perhaps we could offer some commentary on others’ cabinets and explain the thinking behind how we compiled our own.

Cabinet picks #13 - #14 - #15
Secretary of Transportation: Mitch Landrieu (Lieutenant Governor of Louisiana from 2004 to 2010 and Mayor of New Orleans from 2010 to 2018).
Secretary of Education: Regina Barrow (Member of the Louisiana House of Representatives from 2005 to 2016 and Member of the Louisiana State Senate since 2016).
Secretary of Veterans' Affairs: Kai Kahele (Member of the Hawaii Senate from 2016 to 2020).

My cabinet is completed! The basic idea is a broad coalition approximately centred on Christian democracy and on Louisiana with a bent to the left, which fits very well for President. I was in part inspired by the 1960's Italian centrosinistra coalitions and I also have a running joke where I associate each of my picks to a Cold War era Italian party, notwithstanding the obvious massive differences between the two contexts.

President: John Bel Edwards (LA)
Vice President: Bob Casey (PA)

Secretary of State: Chris Smith (NJ)
Secretary of the Treasury: Jeff Merkley (OR)
Secretary of Defense: John Murtha (PA)
Attorney General: Katrina Jackson (LA)
Secretary of the Interior: Paulette Jordan (ID)
Secretary of Agriculture: Gerald Boudreaux (LA)
Secretary of Commerce: John McCollister (NE)
Secretary of Labor: Tammy Baldwin (WI)
Secretary of Health and Human Services: Joseph Cao (LA)
Secretary of Housing and Urban Development: Marty Walsh (MA)
Secretary of Transportation: Mitch Landrieu (LA)
Secretary of Energy: Mike Fortner (IL)
Secretary of Education: Regina Barrow (LA)
Secretary of Veterans' Affairs: Kai Kehele (HI)
Secretary of Homeland Security: Lucille Roybal-Allard (CA)
