China’s government banned effeminate men on TV and told broadcasters Thursday to promote “revolutionary culture,” broadening a campaign to tighten control over business and society and enforce official morality.

President Xi Jinping has called for a “national rejuvenation,” with tighter Communist Party control of business, education, culture and religion. Companies and the public are under increasing pressure to align with its vision for a more powerful China and healthier society.

The party has reduced children’s access to online games and is trying to discourage what it sees as unhealthy attention to celebrities.

Broadcasters must “resolutely put an end to sissy men and other abnormal esthetics,” the National Radio and TV Administration said, using an insulting slang term for effeminate men — “niang pao,” or literally, “girlie guns.”

That reflects official concern that Chinese pop stars, influenced by the sleek, fashionable look of some South Korean and Japanese singers and actors, are failing to encourage China’s young men to be masculine enough.
sure, it's funny, but if we didn't have a strong constitution and a multi party system, I could see our conservatives trying something like this.

The CCP goes into outrage mode about foreign influence in the media every now and then. Things always basically return to normal later.

Xi says to doubters about China’s future growth trajectory “don’t be economic girly men”.

Men who don’t conform to societal standards about masculinity - including the ultimate standard, heterosexuality - are always a cultural threat.

How similar do you think Chinese conservatives are from American conservatives? My general impression is that other developed country conservatives (aside from Australia) are much more sinister boujee and evil-ish. Conservatives in Africa and Asia are much more in like a factionalist 50s sort of ethnic favoritism and corruption + organized crime and political separatist groups. For the last two, see Haiti, Colombia, Myanmar, India, the DRC, Indonesia, Mexico. I dunno what conservatism is in South Africa for instance and than megachurches and sexism.

Wonder if this will be what opens the eyes of some perpetually-online CCP bootlickers. They're among the people most likely to suffer from this.

"Conservatives" is an odd word to apply to these sorts of nominally-commie statist-party hardliners (see also: Soviet "conservatives" under Gorbachev), even though it feels accurate. I think a more apt term in this case is simply "nationalists"; the gender panic here is at heart about "Chineseness" rather than about religion or morality like it would be in the US.

I see why it looks like this from the outside, but recently the feeling is that some things really are changing. Historically the government here has prized stability above all, and was hesitant to change things too fast, but recently there's just been a whirlwind of changes. I think the government is trying to address potential long-term issues now.
