Gamers truly are the most oppressed group in society

Bottom text

Quote
BEIJING (AP) — China is banning children from playing online games for more than three hours a week, the harshest restriction so far on the game industry as Chinese regulators continue cracking down on the technology sector.

Minors in China can only play games between 8 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Fridays, weekends and on public holidays starting Sept. 1, according to a notice from the National Press and Publication Administration.

That limits gaming to three hours a week for most weeks of the year, down from a previous restriction set in 2019 that allowed minors play games for an hour and a half per day and three hours on public holidays.

The new regulation affects some of China’s largest technology companies, including gaming giant Tencent, whose Honor of Kings online multiplayer game is hugely popular globally, as well as gaming company NetEase.

Why can't America do this (and with adults as well as children for that matter)?

Good. It may upset teenagers enough that one may get upset enough to kill Winnie the Pooh.

This is going to hit the live services market, and by extension re-incentivise the production of other kinds of games. China's taking one for the team in the fight against microtransactions.

I guess they'll have to spend more time doing this sort of gaming instead.

Gaming addiction is a problem, but the state stepping in like this boomer move isn’t a good idea.

Great idea pal, how exactly would it be enforced?

However China plans to enforce would be a great help in determining how America should enforce it.

Wonder if this will be what opens the eyes of some perpetually-online CCP bootlickers. They're among the people most likely to suffer from this.

Apparently this doesn't apply to *all* online gaming in any case?

The Fourth Chinese Revolution will see massive uprisings in all urban centers and the eventual formation of the Gamers Republic of China (GRC).  No longer will Chinese worry about water fluoridation as all water is replaced with Mountain Dew.  The New Red Guard (named for the color of their eyes because of all that screen time) will storm warehouses and redistribute gaming chairs to the people.

Unfortunately, tensions between the US and GRC will rise and I can foresee only two outcomes: one, the export of the gamer revolution to all countries of the world (I think the eNaxalites will be a big thing).  Alternatively, the Chinese population will eventually fall to zero because of a lack of gamer reproduction.

as well as ban children under the age of 12 from making in-game purchases.

this should be raised to the age of 18, and be extended everywhere globalwide... How often have i heard of a parent's bank account being plundered because some teenager bought 8000 euro's of IRL money of in-game stuff.

Like that would be enforceable at all unless you want to arrest a lot of parents or arrest the kids themselves.

No, by punishing game companies who allow for in-game purchases without ID verification. minors betting on sports betting sites is also not possible because you need verification.

This reads like some sort of right wing wet dream.

The Communist 'C' in CCP is so small you can't even see it anymore.

Honestly, the more I think about it the more i'm convinced that China is simply a fascist state now.

1) Totalitarian one party state with a strong leader, centralized power, and an established a cult of personality. An abhorrence for democratic practices.

2) A push for national invigoration and consciousness. An emphasis on obedience and discipline including the use of violence to achieve political and social goals. Disrespect for human rights and curtailed civil liberties.

3) State led capitalism and secularism.

4) Militarism and nationalism.

Not everything has to be so extreme. Limiting hours of online gaming for children is closer to a silly, misguided paternalism than 'fascism'.

Authoritarianism is characteristic of most communist-run countries, and nationalism is nothing new in communist countries either. As far as militarism - for such a large power, not that much actually. Compare to Russia which has intervened in Ukraine, Georgia, and Syria; or ourselves, who have intervened in Libya, Afghanistan, Iraq, etc. or even India. The PRC is the least militaristic major power - particularly when looking at areas outside of its territorial claims. China essentially now has a form of mild center-left communism that has made concessions to efficiencies that the market allows when allocating economic goods. Its authoritarianism is deplorable but essentially of a left-wing flavor.
