Probably John Patterson, Governor of Alabama from 1959 to 1963.

In 1948, Thurmond was listed as the Democratic nominee in Alabama.  And in a 2008 interview, he said that he supported Obama.

young white southerner who later fought in Korea and had his life saved by a black fellow soldier which caused him to completely change his views on race and realize that actually desegregating the military had actually been a good thing.

There had to be at least a handful in South Carolina, as Thurmond typically overperformed over Reps, especially during & after The Reagan era. where he was a mainstream Republican. I know OP was referring to Thurmond '48, but there were likely a number of senator Thurmond-Obama voters.

I'm also not sure about South Carolina. Every official source I've seen still lists him as State's Rights Democratic.

Apparently he died pretty recently, in June. Just three months short of his 100th birthday.
