Or: Are social media pile-ons of people who are not famous, influential, or powerful until they go “viral” for some perceived transgression incredibly toxic and dehumanizing?

It really depends on the situation.  On one hand, it's REALLY easy to not go viral doing something horrible if you don't do something horrible.  On the other hand, sometimes what is "horrible" is very subjective.  If you've been a good, stand up person before the incident and the "horrible" is subjective, your friends, bosses and acquaintances will know that is not the person you are and you won't suffer much.  If you are a piece of sh**t in life, and the "horrible" is subjective, you might not survive.  Don't be a piece of sh**t to the people around you day to day, and don't do things on camera that could get you hated by a decent percentage of Americans and you'll be ok 99.999994% of the time.

so my answer is No, it is not cruel and inhumane if it's deserved.

<there are some situations where the doxxing is clearly uncalled for and the person works in a field that has to deal with a certain demographic of customer, then there might be some unfairness going on>

There was a Dad or Uncle walking out of Court in Western Australia who was protecting the privacy of his family from being filmed in Perth.

The son had been torturing Kangaroo's. Jail time etc.

But the media went onto Court grounds and goaded the family. That is instigating a fight for no reason with upset family members.

Instigation of fights with angry relatives should be an offence for journalists with cameras.

Case in point:

Journalist waiting outside Court for sister gets sprayed with Coke by brother.

Hobart Magistrates Court

It's just gutter journalism
