For alternate history, I find a worse Great Recession to be a plausible catalyst for radical political upheaval in the 2010s. Assuming a contagion effect from a Greek default and exit from the Eurozone, how bad could things have gotten?

Well, about half of the Eurozone did indeed go through a double-dip recession from about mid-2011 to the first quarter of 2013, followed by several years of stagnation and lackluster growth, so just take the effects that happened there and make them global. Doesn't look too pretty.

Knowing what we know now, the most plausible jumping off point is that the 2009 swine flu ends up being dangerous enough to require months of social distancing.
