Communism: After Gus Hall?

(1/1)

TommyC1776:
What happened to the Communist Party after Gus Hall died in Oct. 2000?

Joe Republic:
The party was already small even before the late 1980's, but during that time it shrank even further due to the steady collapse of communism in Europe, which caused deep rifts and factions within the party to emerge.  By the time Hall died in 2000 the party was tiny, and many more members left as a result.

The party was kind of screwed after 1985ish when Gorbachev took power.  Hall was an anti-revisionist so he opposed glasnost and perestroika and whatnot and he openly criticized Gorbachev.  This led the USSR to stop funding the CPUSA.  Also, the party became split between anti-revisionists like hall and democratic/market socialists more in line with Gorbachev.  Webb isn't a communist, he's a democratic socialist.
