Probably a younger Senator from a Sun Belt state who can appeal to both moderates and progressives.

I don't think Democrats would feel compelled to wrest control from the neoliberal faction if that's what you're trying to get at here, because an 8-12 year Biden/Harris administration would be looked at as a complete two-to-three-term whole and therefore a success. So someone from the Biden/Harris administration or in its mold.

How is Harris a one-term president?  The two most plausible scenarios would both involve Harris succeeding either a one- or two-term Biden, then losing reelection.  So, if Biden doesn’t seek reelection, the answer to your question is Harris in 2028 (she losses reelection, after winning in 2024), or if Biden is two-term President, Harris in both 2028 and 2032 (wins in 2028, loses in 2032).

I think the party will look to people who seem to have more political talent or appeal to centrists. Given the importance of African American voters in primaries, it would be a good opening for a centrist (Eric Adams) or swing-state (Rafael Warnock, Stacey Abrams- assuming she wins) official. Pete Buttigieg would also be a major contender, as his first few months as Transportation Secretary have gone well, and he would represent a major milestone.

It gets hard to predict the nominee in 2032, if you consider what previous nominees were up to eleven years before the election. Jimmy Carter and Barack Obama were state senators. Hillary Clinton was expected to win in 2008. Al Gore's presidential primary had failed. Joe Biden was supposed to end his career as Vice President.

Eleven years ago, Kamala Harris was a district attorney.

There's a good chance the 2032 nominee is way too obscure, or someone overlooked because we have different expectations about their political schedules. Hell, maybe it'll be Harris again.

I like how everyone just presumes that Biden won't seek a second term.  How many Feinstein's, RBG's, Leahy's do you need to observe to know it's not at all out of the question that Biden is all in on 2024.
