The Democratic Party, not terribly surprisingly for a party at least nominally of the Left, likes to wax lyrical about the benefits of trades unions.

However, I can think of at least two areas where they run counter to important Democratic goals: 1) police unions, who often make it difficult for members to be fired for misconduct; and are generally an obstacle in "police reform" and 2) healthcare, where the exclusionary practices of the AMA are one of the main reasons for the extortionate cost of American healthcare.

Is it time for a new tone on unions, or is it time to legalise closed shops?

don't all unions "block members from being fired for misconduct" and are generally obstacles to reform?

Yes. I'm pointing out an area where this is of special concern for Democrats.

that's the only reason unions should both exist and be widespread

AMA is a professional association not a union.

yes

if we're not gonna yet make employment 100% optional to live a first world standard of living then make firing basically impossible imo

It is time to legalise closed shops but also legalise firing striking workers
