I remember some here on Atlas saying that McCain would have been very competitive in the NE, he could have taken NY and NJ......

Some polls show him actually leading Gore in NY, Mayor Giuliani endorsed McCain and McCain campaigned with Lazio and Franks in their Senate campaigns.

If Gore did not pick Lieberman as his running mate, he probably would have endorsed Lieberman's Senate bid....

Overall? No.

Pennsylvania would be close and Maine would probably flip...and NH would be even farther away. But that'd probably be offset by WV, Arkansas, Tennessee, and Missouri staying in D turf.

Not in 2000, I think it’s more likely that he would have defeated a Democratic opponent in those states in 2004. Think about the boost that Bush got in the tristate area after 9/11 and imagine how much bigger it could have been for a more socially moderate Republican.
