Good News!

For comparison: Bulgaria reached "Commission recommends granting of candidate status" on July 15, 1997 and became an EU member on January 1, 2007. Croatia reached this step on April 20, 2004 and became an EU member on July 1, 2013.

It looks like Croatia will join the Schengen Area. Earlier this week, the Netherlands dropped their opposition to Romania joining Schengen, but it and Bulgaria's candidacies are "politically and technically intertwined". So even if Austria dropped its opposition to Romania, it still won't be allowed to join.

It's ironic that the two counties unlikely to be allowed to join Schengen this week have been waiting to do so since 2011, while Croatia will be allowed to join, having only become an EU member in 2013.

"The enlargement of the passport-free Schengen Area has been put under serious question ahead of a key vote in Brussels, as Austria and the Netherlands continue to have concerns about the admission of Romania and Bulgaria."

"Interior ministers from the European Union are expected to take a vote on Thursday to decide on the long-stalled candidacies. A unanimous endorsement is required to admit new members into Schengen and abolish checks at all internal borders."

Croatia let in to Schengen zone, Bulgaria and Romania made to wait:

That means on January 1, 2023, Croatia will adopt the euro and join Schengen.

Bosnia and Herzegovina became an EU candidate country on 15, December.

The EU now has:

three candidate countries: Bosnia and Herzegovina, Moldova, and Ukraine

four candidates currently negotiating/under accession talks:

Albania              (0 of 33 chapters open, started negotiating in 2022)
Montenegro        (33 of 33 chapters open, 3 closed, started negotiating in 2012)
North Macedonia (0 of 33 chapters open, started negotiating in 2022)
Serbia                (22 of 34 chapters open, 2 closed, started negotiating in 2014)

and Turkey:
Turkey        (16 of 33 chapters open, 1 closed, started negotiating in 2005, officially frozen since 2018)

*note* The extra chapter for Serbia is "Other Issues: Relations with Kosovo"

There is a 0% chance this happens, but it's still relevant to this thread. Thus:

Note that she didn't mention a time frame:

Starting accession negotiations would be a big moment, even if it will still take a long for Ukraine to join the bloc:

Finally, I date was mentioned by someone. 2029 is still very unrealistic, but at least it's not as nuts as the "wo years" some Ukrainian officials were talking about.

Yeah, Georgia is definitely not getting EU candidate status this year. Have fun being in candidate status limbo with Kosovo! It really sucks the Georgian people are stuck with these two faced sellout crooks.

European institutions are preparing to admit Bulgaria and Romania to Schengen this year, with visa-free travel by air expected in October, followed by the abolition of land border controls by 1 January, diplomatic sources in Brussels and the Bulgarian parliament and government told EURACTIV.

"Until a month ago, the biggest obstacle to Bulgaria’s entry into Schengen was the opposition of the Netherlands.

Mark Rutte’s government has given informal signals that it appreciates the efforts of the Bulgarian parliament and the last four governments to initiate real judicial reform with the introduction of a mechanism for an independent investigation of the chief prosecutor, which was adopted at the end of May."

It's interesting how different Eastern Europe is today (bottom map) compared to this map from 1992. I'd think much of the region's improvement is due to EU membership, as no EU member is in the bottom GDP per capita category.

2021 GDP (nominal) per capital map
Darkest/Navy blue: ≥ $60,000 USD, lighter dark/Duke blue: ≥ $30,000 USD,
medium/neutral blue: ≥ $10,000 USD, light blue: < $10,000 USD

"The renewed push for a larger Europe marks the first such expansion drive since the bloc accepted Croatia into its ranks in 2013."

NATO members Montenegro, North Macedonia, and Albania, seem likely to be the countries that are the closest to joining the EU:

This leaves only Cluster 6 "External Relations" left to complete screening for North Macedonia. It only has two chapters, meaning 31 out of 33 EU chapters have already had screening completed. That's despite the country having started EU membership negotiations just last July.

Obviously these words are just window dressing from Von der Leyen, but it's better than nothing I suppose:

On Monday, Victor Orban compared the EU to the Soviet Union. Last time I checked, EU troops weren't occupying Hungary. At least he seems to be saying EU rule is better than the "Soviet times"?

"“Today, things pop up that remind us of the Soviet times. Yes, it happens that history repeats itself,” Orbán said in the city of Veszprem, local media reported. “Fortunately, what once was tragedy is now a comedy at best. Fortunately, Brussels is not Moscow. Moscow was a tragedy. Brussels is just a bad contemporary parody.”

“We had to dance to the tune that Moscow whistled, Brussels whistles too, but we dance as we want to, and if we don’t want to, then we don’t dance,” Orbán added."
