Quote
Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas rejected requests by the Biden administration to not move forward with a vote at the United Nations Security Council on accepting Palestine as a full member of the UN, four Palestinian, U.S. and Israeli officials told Axios.

The big picture: Tension, frustration and mistrust have been growing between the Abbas government and the Biden administration over the last three years. The Palestinian president sees the administration as not acting to push a two-state solution in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Driving the news: The UN Security Council is expected to vote as soon as Thursday on a draft resolution that would give Palestine full member status at the UN instead of its current observer status.

Gaining full member status — which would amount to the UN recognizing a Palestinian state — first requires nine votes to bring a resolution before the 15-member UN Security Council.
The council, which includes the U.S., would need to approve the application, and it would then have to receive at least two-thirds of General Assembly votes.

What a laughable proposal by the Biden adminstration to solve the conflict. "Sure, we are going to deny your statehood, how about you accept our invitation to the White House and have a slice of pizza?" All of this bickering about a two-state solution and the U.S. is going to pursue nations to block the statehood proposal at the United Nations. Abas was correct in rejecting this offer.

Its now obvious the US government is split between those who still want to support Israel in whatever it does no matter what the cost, and those who have developed a more pragmatic stance.

Biden was once clearly in the first camp, the question is if he is slowly shifting into the second.

Palestinians would not be even having this discussion if it wasn’t for the Hamas terror attack. Therefore logic follows if they do get statehood in the near future it would not have happened if the Hamas attack didn’t happen. Palestinians and other groups will correctly see terrorism as a good thing for their goals.

Maybe so, but if anyone official is reading this, please know I will postpone my own statehood proposal if invited for pizza at the White House.

I don't think there are two camps. It's more that Biden is wedded to the Trump policy of the Abraham Accords and getting Saudi Arabia to recognize Israel, and sees the Palestinians as a bargaining chip to that end. Which is ironic because, if this policy were to succeed, it would be because of a strategy initiated by Trump. Oct. 7 is also arguably a result of this strategy. Biden could have basically blamed Trump's Abraham Accord strategy for Oct. 7 and then moved to accept a Palestinian state under the PLA, while freeing U.S. policy from both Likud and Prince Salman, but instead he is sticking to the Trump strategy. It's yet another example of how despite changing parties, Biden has essentially continued yet another Trump policy.
