Afghanistan was "fixed" in 2020 with no culpability for (then) former VP Joseph R. Biden. People wanted an agreement with the Taliban for "peace" and got the agreement at a cost that might make war look better very soon.
The collapse of the Afghan republic has an obvious parallel in the fall of the Republic of Vietnam in 1975. There had been an agreement, and after some early wins for the eventual victor far from the capital, the ARVN simply disintegrated.
