OK, here's a scenario. Casey wins, and runs for governor in 2010. He wins then, so now the seat's vacant. Who's he appoint?

Oh yeah to get this out of the way:

<Phil, Jake and Mitty>It doesn't matter because Casey won't win because Santorum is a campaigning god and PA hates silly populists</Phil, Jake and Mitty>

I'm not sure, but Ed Rendell has made it clear that this will be his last campaign for political office if that's what you're getting at. It will be an open seat in 2010.

Red - do you really think that this is something that Casey WANTS to do, or are you just throwing this out there as a hypothetical?

It's just a hypothetical, but there is really no question that Casey will run for governor again sometime. Whether it will be in 2010 is debatable, he's young enough to wait for later, and he might not want to simply win 2010, serve two terms and then be done with politics.

Rendell won't run for it. He's retiring after his second term as Governor.

The liberals in the party would force him to nominate one of their own. Remember that there is a Senate election in 2010 already. If the Dem loses for Specter's seat that person will probably be appointed.

Specter's seat will be between Allyson Schwartz vs. Melissa Hart.  Not sure what would happen if Casey were to run for Gov.

If Toomey, Santorum (if defeated this year) and a certain somebody else doesn't run (won't say who the other person is) then I'd be back Hart. That would be one great race.

I think he recently said he would not- but might consider VP.

I read an article maybe last week where he said it was his last campaign, with the possible exception that he might accept a VP nomination in 08. But that was the only stipulation - if he dosen't get the VP nod, he's retiring.

Rendell did say that this is his campaign but people shouldn't necessarily believe him. If offered VP, he'll take it. I don't see him running for the Senate.

This also depends on who we have as president for example if we were to have Romney as president and if he were to be doing a good job and gettting good approval ratings around midterm election time then I say this race leans republican and if he wern't doing so good I'd say this leans Democratic. PA in my view swings with the breeze.

Who controls PA's other statewide offices and how likely are any of those officeholders to run for Specter's seat in 2010?

Aside from Casey, Rendell and nut job Knoll...

Tom Corbett - State Attorney General - Not likely
Jack Wagner - State Auditor General - Not likely

Knoll shoudn't even be menitoned.  I'm surprised Rendell sticks with her.

I only mentioned her because he asked for the statewide officials. Rendell feels he has to stick with her because, oddly enough, she has a following out west.

We do not have an elected Secretary of State. Corbett is a Republican and Wagner is a Dem.

You know what the funny/sad part is?  If Casey wins the Senate, this will happen.

Why can't anyone see what and enormous piece of human fecal matter this guy is?  Why don't people wonder why this guy has never acctually done a single job that he has been elected to?  Further more, this whole Senate campaign is just a stunt to set him up in 4 years, regardless of the result, he's gonna run, he woudl just rather do it as Senator than as nothing... not that being Senator will acctually make him more than nothing, but it will be another title to use for a job he never did.

The only thing I care about is he is not Santorum. He could want to gain his Senate seat to spy for al-Qaeda for all I care.

Yep. I loved his pledge to serve a full Senate term.
