Embarrassing start to the season by my Arsenal. Getting thrashed 2-0 by promoted Brentford.

UEFA is considering replacing the Financial Fair Play model in favor of an NBA/MLB-esque model of salary caps and luxury taxes, effective the 2022/23 season.

90Min:
Quote
UEFA will soon lay out proposals to replace their current Financial Fair Play system by introducing a salary cap and a luxury tax.
FFP rules, which were first introduced in 2010, demand that teams break even over a three-year period in an attempt to stop teams from recklessly spending, although the regulations have come under fire in recent years.

According to The Times, UEFA are open to the idea of completely overhauling the system by introducing a salary cap, similar to those seen in the United States in Major League Baseball and the NBA.

[...]

Teams would be given the freedom to exceed that salary cap, but only if they are prepared to pay an extra luxury tax, which could see them pay nearly double the amount of their breach into a fund which would then be distributed to other teams in their competition.

[...]

Repeat offenders could even be threatened with bans from European competitions, with UEFA keen to do more to prevent mass overspending.

The Premier League table after 3 matchweeks: Sp*rs leading the table, while Arsenal are in last.  Depressing for Gunners fans.

For the first time since the Taylor Report came into force, safe standing areas will be permitted at the grounds of England's top 2 levels of footy (Premier League and Championship) come January.

The Guardian:
Quote
Clubs in the Premier League and Championship will be able to offer licensed standing areas from 1 January as part of a pilot programme. The Sports Grounds Safety Authority (SGSA) set out the plans in a statement on Wednesday.

The introduction of designated safe standing areas would mean an end to the blanket ban on standing in the top two divisions of English football, which has been in place for more than 25 years. Clubs must apply to be part of the “early adopter” programme by 6 October and, if approved, will be able to operate a licensed standing area from New Year’s Day until the end of the season.

The SGSA said the project would be independently evaluated, with all other areas of grounds remaining all-seater. Standing areas in what is now the Premier League and Championship were outlawed by legislation passed in the wake of the 1989 Hillsborough disaster, which led to the deaths of 97 Liverpool fans.

[...]

The announcement affects clubs subject to the government’s all-seater policy. That includes clubs in the Premier League and Championship, or any club who have been in those divisions for three or more seasons since 1994-95, plus Wembley Stadium and the Principality Stadium.

Arsenal led 1-nil, then coughed up the lead to trail 2-1, and at the dying seconds, Alexandre Lacazette scored to snatch a point for the Gunners to draw 2-2 with Crystal Palace, coached by former AFC legend Patrick Vieira.

Manchester City's streak of 4 consecutive Carabao (EFL) Cup trophies comes to a crashing halt, as West Ham beat them on penalties 5-3 as the game score finished nil-nil. There will be a new Carabao Cup trophy winner this season.

Bayern crashed out of the DFB-Pokal 2nd round, as Borussia Mönchengladbach walloped them good 5-nil.

Looks like the 5 subs/3 opportunities rule will become permanent.

Sky Sports:
Quote
During a virtual meeting on Wednesday and following a number of requests from confederations, associations, leagues and other key stakeholders to bring in five substitutions permanently, the advisory panels have made the suggestion.

An IFAB statement read: "FAP-TAP today recommended that competitions should be able to decide on increasing the number of substitutes according to the needs of their football environment, while the current number of substitution opportunities (three plus half-time) should stay the same."

Aaron Ramsdale was out of this world today, as he made several clutch saves (including one off the line near the end of the 1st half) in Arsenal's 2-nil win over Leicester City.

NBCSN, which airs most of the Premier League games in the US that appear on linear TV, will close down on December 31st. Games that NBCSN normally aired will move to USA, CNBC, Peacock, and even E!.

NBC keeps the Premier League broadcast rights until 2028.

Awful Announcing:
Quote
After plenty of discussion over the last two months about where the U.S. rights to the Premier League would go (NBC, CBS, ESPN and WarnerMedia were all reportedly interested, with the first three advancing to a second round of bidding) and if the package would be split or not, those rights negotiations concluded by maintaining the status quo in terms of network. The league announced Thursday they’ve reached a six-year extension with current rightsholder NBCUniversal, which covers both English-language and Spanish-language (Telemundo) coverage until 2028.

Arsenal cough up yet another 1-nil lead, lose to Everton 2-1. That's 6 points thrown away these past two games. Those 6 could come in handy if we miss out on Top 4, St. Totteringham's, and/or even European play.

Barcelona are off to the Europa League, as Bayern beat them 3-nil and Benfica won 2-0 over Dynamo Kyiv. For the 1st time since the 2000-01 UCL campaign, when S Club 7 were still pretty much all over Fox Family stateside, they fail to advance out of the group stage.

In the US, NBCSN's final Premier League game to be televised ends in a 3-1 victory for Manchester United. RIP NBCSN.

As of January 1st, almost all of what would've aired on NBCSN heads to USA for Premier League coverage.

Refs stole that game for Man City, and Arsenal were robbed of at least a point if not all three.
