Pre-1994, baseball was No. 1 in sports next to basketball and football was No. 3. Since August 12, 1994, baseball has never been the same, even if they revolved things, even if the sport survived the 90s Braves run and the 90s Yankees dynasty, the steroid era, international sports stars like Hideki Matsui and Masahiro Tanaka....

Did the strike suck the oxygen out of the MLB?

For people who like baseball, it still is America's pastime. For people who don't like baseball, it wasn't America's pastime before 1994 either.

Yes, in Quebec.

Even if the Expos would've lost to the Yankees, a NL pennant and world series appearance would have still be a huge deal to Montreal.

I am fascinated by this assertion that basketball was ever more popular than football.

Baseball always has had outsize popularity in the Northeast in my understanding

But it was on a downward spiral throughout the rest of the country far before 1994

I guess he's thinking in 1994 Michael Jordan made it more popular, but I'm not sure about that.

The 1994 strike was a major blow to MLB.  It recovered quite a bit with the Mark McGwire/Sammy Sosa home run battle in 1998 and the Yankees great run from 1996-2000, but the resultant doping scandal was devastating.
