Pro-choice Lieberman as running mate would cost McCain some votes in red states, like aforementioned Missouri. I don't think the Republicans would have gained anything electorally with Lieberman. Maybe they perform a little better in the popular vote?

McCain has said that he regrets not picking Lieberman. I feel his regret is more about his wish to have had a Republican / Democrat on one ticket; and he was also close friends with Lieberman personally
