Admirable fellow, working as a German to save Jews from the Holocaust. I am guessing the topic was made because of the moral quandary of him working within the Nazi apparatus to achieve his goals?

Yes, plus joining the Nazi Party in 1931 and being a Wehrmacht officer during the war. It's a fascinating example of someone trying to do the right thing from inside an irredeemably evil power structure. The engineering unit he commanded contributed to the Nazi war effort. Would it have been better if he had left Germany in 1938?
