I think the first part of the strategy is to improve a ton with Hispanics- and especially rural Hispanics, in the many rural counties in that state- this isn’t as hard as it may seem (look at the RGV).

The real issue for the Republicans in the Albuquerque area. To win New Mexico they’d have to break 40% or so there, which is hypothetically possible if a lot of retirees moved there, but even then, I don’t see NM truly flipping until the 2030’s.

Win over 45% of the Hispanic vote.

Have the nominee be from the state or popular enough from a neighboring state. Bush only won it during his successful reelection bid, because he was from neighboring Texas and did well enough with Hispanic/Latino voters. Even McCain lost it by double digits and Bush lost it in '00. At this point, especially considering that Trump improved over McCain and Romney, I don't think anyone else would win the state, unless Dems lose ground with Hispanics/Latinos and even then, the Dems presence in cities are large enough that they alone could carry the state.

And even then, Bush took the state by a razor-thin margin

Hispanic voters are likely the key, but as THG says with the backwards trend in Albuquerque they would struggle unless they reversed it well enough. They should make preliminary spending here though, and not write it off immediately.

Win nationally by a landslide. NM won't vote to the right of the NPV in the foreseeable future.

Endorse Mexican-American culture as a norm for white Christians.

I don’t think even huge improvements with Latino voters alone (which will be a much heavier lift than some here are claiming) would be enough if they can’t reduce the Democratic margins among white voters in Santa Fe/Albuquerque. Basically, a Republican would have to have appeal among college-educated whites to reverse the trends a bit in the cities while continuing to gain in the Southern part of the state. Possible under very good conditions for them, but I don’t see it becoming a tipping point state.

They need to appeal more to educated whites, winning Hispanics alone isn't enough as many have said, and the real issue for Republicans in NM is how much they've collapsed in Bernalillo County, they need to get some of that back to have a chance.

1. Stop calling latinos rapists and criminals.
2. Be slightly less insane on economic matters.

End of list.

The GOP isn't winning New Mexico. It's like Democrats setting their eyes on Utah. It's just not happening. The GOP can waste all the money they want in the Land of Enchantment, but those 5 electoral votes are safely blue for the time being. Hispanic gains will certainly not be enough and the GOP can't wish Santa Fe and Albuqurque to just suddenly reverse leftward trends and shift rightward. I'm not saying it'll never vote red, just that it's safely Democratic in 2024. NM is not going Republican, and no amount of funding will make it flip red in three years', or even seven years', time.
