Quote
(CNN) -- For the past year or so, Ron DeSantis has been on a roll.

The Florida Republican governor's laissez-faire approach to Covid-19 -- and the relatively low number of cases and deaths in such a large and elderly state -- turned him into a celebrity in the same circles where Donald Trump is a secular saint.

Except that, suddenly, Florida's numbers don't look so good with the Delta variant of the coronavirus punishing the state.

As the Wall Street Journal wrote over the weekend:

"The state accounts for one in five new infections in the U.S. and logged 73,181 cases over the past week, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Florida had 341 cases per 100,000 people over the past week, second only to Louisiana. The weekly total of new cases reported by Florida jumped more than fourfold between July 1 and July 22, reaching its highest point since mid-January."

That surge has put pressure on DeSantis to take formal steps to limit the spread. He has, to date, resisted those efforts -- including any reconsideration of his order that kids returning to school in the state don't need to wear masks.

It won't matter to the Republican Party, especially Florida Republicans. Hell, it probably endears him more to them.

This won’t make a difference, no matter how much certain users here want it to.

You cannot stop the Ron!

Yeah this won’t change a thing. I mean Florida had a bad situation last summer and it barely made a dent.

Honest question, why is there the belief on the Republican side that DeSantis is some sort of powerhouse candidate? What separates him from the dozen generic Republicans who are likely to run?  To me the key for Republicans winning in 2024 is the upper mid west,  I don't see how a generic governor from the deep south helps them there.

As others have said, this won't matter. COVID didn't matter electorally in 2020, and that was near the peak of the pandemic. It's deplorable, but that's just the way it is.

It most certainly does and will matter by next year if we don’t course correct immediately. This new variant is effecting younger folks a lot more. Dismiss this issue at your own peril. It’s going to catch up to Ron sooner or later. The rhetoric will only outlast the facts on the ground for so long. Take the vaccine!!!! (Obviously consult with your doctor first).

The dedication some have to DeSantis rivals the kind of commitment people have to Trump. People will believe he’s handled COVID wonderfully regardless of what the statistics say.

He is from the Sun Belt, but Florida is too weird and unique to be similar to GA, AZ, and TX. Florida swung to the right in 2020, while the rest of the Sun Belt swung left in 2020.

DeSantis sees every Covid death as a policy victory, not sure why this would hurt him

I'm wondering if DeSantis isn't going to be 2024's Scott Walker. (If Donnie Dumb**** suffers a major malfunction, that is. If the cult's Mango Messiah is still motile and capable of glossolalia, he'll be the nominee.)

I thought he was the best governor in the country, though?

Seems to me that he should be actually good at, you know, governing, to earn that distinction.

Florida consistently has had less deaths per capita than most blue states.

Just out of curiosity...what does this board want desantis to do?

Florida isn't any more "open" than other states. It has as many "restrictions" right now as california.

And desantis has been very pro-vaccine.

Why is it his fault that a bunch of idiots didn't get the vaccine?

also, calfiornia's growth rate in cases is on par with florida's right now. San Fran just recorded the highest testing positivity rate since records began.

Nevada is a mess right now too.

If desantis is to blame for florida's current surge, why isn't newsom to blame? He lifted all restrictions on 6/15.

But more imporantly.

WHY IS THIS BOARD TREATING UNVACCINATED COVID DEAD PEOPLE AS VICTIMS? THEY MADE THE CHOICE TO NOT GET A FREE MIRACLE SERUM AND THEY PAID THE PRICE. THEY ARE VICTIMS THE SAME WAY A RUSSIAN ROULETTE PLAYER IS A VICTIM.

Still don't get it. IMHO DeSantis is just a boring generic Republican, there is nothing special about him.

Good Guillum was leading by six pts a mnth before the Election and Lost, Crist is still the underdog but with 500 days left he can win being only 10 pts behind, Biden Approvals aren't typical of a normal range Prez, if Trump was at 53 percent  in 2018, while he was being impeached for Ukraine, Rs would say sweep

It only poses a major risk to people who aren’t yet vaccinated. If more people get vaxxed, then the risk decreases significantly.

Florida can just change from weekly COVID updates to once-per-decade updates.

We Republicans are also relieved! Any Republican who gives leftists the skitters has my admiration and vote 🗳😉🤭
