This former longtime Democratic county throughout much of the 20th century flipped to Trump in 2016 (after last voting Republican in 1972) and increased its margin for Trump in 2020.

The Tamms supermax prison closed here in 2013 so they probably have an pragmatically tough on crime stance in this county. Moves to replace the other prisons elsewhere in the state have met a lot of antagonism.
