JUNE 2021 - UNEMPLOYMENT RATE BY STATE (%)

Image Link

BLUE - BELOW NATIONAL AVERAGE (5.9%)
RED - ABOVE NATIONAL AVERAGE (5.9%)
YELLOW - EXACTLY AT NATIONAL AVERAGE (5.9%)

MAY 2021 NATIONAL AVERAGE: 5.8%

NOTE: I don't mean any political connotation by the colors used on the map, but am using them because red-blue color schemes are generally more accessible to color-blind people than red-green

NJ is a wealthy state, but has high unemployment.

Murphy is lucky that COVID happened in his term, or else he would have been a one-term governor.

It's easy to pick on New Jersey, but the premise here is actually wrong.

Wow, is Utah really that low? It doesn't feel that low. *Everywhere* is hiring here, and a lot of businesses have dramatically reduced hours still.

Local government education jobs specifically fell by 144,000, and state government education roles declined by 17,000.

Interesting to see local government layoffs stunting job growth despite decent enough wage growth numbers. Given most public sector employees are unionized, I'm guessing the losses were most heavily felt among clerical/administrative staff? Or could there be resistance to returning to an in-person setting?
