Haha, you're a fool. It was of course illegal to leave under the Soviets.
I would think it a better response to tmcusa2 to point out that the Berlin Wall was in place to keep their people from leaving, not to keep other people from entering. Surely no one would view it as a human rights atrocity if that wall had been there to keep residents of West Germany from flooding into Easy Germany.
