I’ve found that the “dirtbag left” is fond of saying “lib”, somewhat as an ironic appropriation of Fox News-level discourse (although, of course, ironic stupidity is still stupidity).

HP practice, but many FFs participate in it, unfortunately.

This isn't new, not even in the US. Phil Ochs was getting nervous laughter out of audiences with "Love Me, I'm a Liberal" in the mid-sixties.

Some of the more radical people I knew ten years ago were fond of kvetching about bourgeois liberals, with the damning emphasis much more on the first word than on the second. The people who spoke this way could be unsavory in their own fashion, but there was more substance there than you will find in the typical post-2016 dirtbag type, who is just aping jokes from their favorite media brands and getting emotionally invested in vapid interpersonal beefs.

When someone on Chapo Trap House derides an MSNBC host or NYT columnist as a "liberal," there is no real political content to that critique. They're just calling them a square. That is how the term functions for most people who adopt this language.

Never understood why "lib" wasn't appropriated to call out the Internet Libertarians.

Like most political humour, it's funniest when self-deprecatory. In general, people do not understand or care about other ideology's opinions and so their jokes will be extremely low tier unobservant points that are often clouded by their own sense of urgency in trying to own the other side. When people bemoan their own side though, that's when it gets both relatively insightful and normally funnier. See: sites like Clickhole are normally very funny when poking fun of people of their own social milieu, but will easily fold to Trevor Noah style Orange Man bad gags when it comes to their opponents. the same is true in the opposition, although I know less about the specifics because I don't remotely care about right wing humour aside from observing that if you account for age gaps, it is fundamentally the same as liberal humour. (I.e. all people in the same cohort have the same comedic stylings regardless of their ideology).

Most times it is used as an insult is usually in poor taste.

Because then we'd get the inevitable "ackchyually unlike liberals or conservatives we libertarians are an enlightened species advocating both personal and economic freedom, which is why societies without taxes, public education, employee protection laws, environmental protection laws, or social security are truly the only free" and so on and so on
